Curley's IDEAL Safety Razor

These show up from time to time and I needed one for my collection. A bit unusual but that's what I like. It's amazing to see the workmanship, thought and effort that went into some of these razors.
It's basically a frameback with a replaceable blade. There is a tiny lock mechanism located at the heel of the blade that wedges it in place. Swing the lock up and you can drive the blade back and replace it.
The guard bar can be rotated to either side of the blade. To release it you press up on the tail of the razor which allows another lock mechanism to swing out of the way allowing the bar to rotate to either side. Press the lock back in place at the jimped thumb notch and it's locked in place.
The bar can be adjusted to locate it closer or further from the edge of the blade by sliding the bar off the razor and adjusting the small threaded barrel on the end of the bar.
You can also keep the guard off the blade and use it as a conventional frameback or hone it if you don't have a replacement blade.
Pretty clever to work this all out.
I didn't push this too far keeping some of the patina in place and I didn't want to remove any of the patent dates on it which read,
Sept 21 1886,,,, March 5 1889 and June 12 1900.

The following shots shows the breakdown of the piece and the sequence of the blade guard going from one side of the blade to the other.

T. Hessenbruch

These razors have to be some of the most nicely finished blades I have seen. This one only had some minor rusting on the blade which a soft sanding and polish took care of. Fortunately there was little on the shaft as this type of logo , and the Bear on the back would have disappeared quickly if more work was needed.
The only issue was a crack on the one scale. Could it be the back one which I could duplicate easily? No, it had to be the facing one with the stamped logo. Of course.
These scales are Bakelite. I was able to work some epoxy into the crack and let it set. Then to add some reinforcement to it I routed a 3/32 slot across the crack and inserted a roughened up 1/16th rod and imbedded it in epoxy. A small line is still visible but I think it now has some integrity.
It's sitting here with my other Hessenbruch ( NOS I believe with original box) done in French Ivory scales with genuine Ivory tang.
Now it has some company.

Hi all. Newbie from Kansas City, MO

I just found this site tonight and thought introductions might be in order. I have been trying my hand at "old school shaving". Trying to get rid of ingrown hairs and shaving rash.
So far I have tried a Merkur 180 with Astas and sharks. It just took to many passes.
A FaTip with Astras and Sharks. The opposite problem. Almost a BBS with 1 pass, but the razor burn was awful.
A 1918 open comb Gillette with Astras only. That was enough to know this razor wasn't for me...
A 1912 Gem Junior fat handle with a Treet blade. Not a whole lot better than the old Gillette.
An Aristocrat with Personna Reds gave me a nice shave. Not a perfect shave. Just some minor irritation.
A Straight razor... Yeah minor cuts... I don't have enough technique yet to know. My shave wasn't close and after the second neck cut, a gusher, I finished off with the Aristocrat and had major shaving rash and ingrown hairs.
That takes us current. I bought alot of razors to try and am determined to figure out what will work for me.

I have a thing for razors stamped Pa. Especially when they're stamped Allentown Bar Supply ( still there) as I was born in Allentown. The neighboring city to where I now live.
There were some minor issues with some rust on the blade. I removed it and went with the factory style finish.
The tang naturally had rust around the pivot hole under the scales which I cleaned up and redid the shaft with acid to get the original style finish here. At first I couldn't read the logo through the crud and thought it was a Robeson.
The scales had a minor chip on the end which sanded out and the color came right back. Very pretty in person especially when back lit as I did on some of these pics to show them a bit.

Another straight up restoration trying to keep the factory look.
Matched the factory texture on the blade. And was able to keep the etch intact.
The pins are much like you'd find on an Ivory scaled razor. There are not washers and just a half round button. I tried several approaches to duplicate this and settled on my final solution. A pin WITH a washer as you see here. In the first shots you can see the original pins. And my close up you can see my results. With the razor in hand you can't tell,, but the magnified photos do reveal some of the process.
The logo on the scales was kept, though it wasn't a good impression from the start.
But the colors , especially on the inside are just very neat.

Gifting a starter kit

My stepfather is quite fascinated by the fact that I am a wet shaver. He has expressed interest in using a DE, but said he quit and threw his away because blades became harder to find.

My idea is to put together a kit for him and present it as a christmas present. He already uses a brush and a mug soap (in a vintage Old Spice Mug), I'm thinking it's Williams, but it could be VdH as well, but he doesn't get my obsession with brushes and razors anyway. In other words, the kit I'm putting together will include a DE, a sample of blades so he can experiment and find what works best for him, and soap sample. I've got some ABCBA on order from IB, so I figured a 4oz cut in a nice container would be nice for him to try.

Problem is, I'm hung up on which razor would best suit him. He wears a beard (it appears to be a pretty course beard to me), never seen him with out it, so the razor would be for cleaning up and keeping his neck clean. My options are an EJ DE86B that I don't use because it's a little too aggressive for me, a 1949 Super Speed that I've cleaned up and soaked in Barbicide, or a Merkur 34c that I've recently fallen back in love with but once I'm done with this blade it'll probably be a while before I get back to it; or I could go way out and give him one of my E2s with a full set of blades.

What do you guys think would be the best option for him. Keep in mind he's used one before so it shouldn't be too hard to relearn, and once he finds some blades he likes, I'll buy them in bulk and give them to him when I place an order; however I am gonna toss in some drugstore blades for him to try (I know, it's crazy).

If he gets into it, a nice Semogue will probably show up for Father's day, as he's a boar man, and has had his boar for decades. I'm choosing the ABCBA because it's a classic scent that he may recognize it once he uses it the first time.

HTGAM "Cavendish" Body Soap - Vegan -

Most everyone knows by now about How to Grow a Mustache and their shave soaps. In particular I'm a huge fan of the Cavendish scent and just when I thought it couldn't get much better than having that sweet cavendish scent in a shave soap, aftershave balm and underarm deoderant. They make a body soap to go along with everything else!

The scent goes right along with the rest of the line of the cavendish products. With this body soap it seems the scent may be a bit more distinct, which is fine by me. I've got a bar of Flint & Tinder "Campfire & Cutgrass" body soap I'm using right now so when thats used up this HTGAM will be next in line.

Anyone else get a hold of one of these bars yet?

Check Your Furnace

Richard (geezer) sent this to me and asked that I post it. It is some good information about heating systems and the importance of having them checked.

Illness from Furnace problem

Again, it is time to remind / warn folks that there are a lot of pitfalls when heating a home or business during extreme cold.
It is a very good idea to have a furnace repair company come bye and check all the fueled appliances for leakage of gas or their exhaust for traces of CO or other combustion products escaping into the living areas.
I have been having a really bad autumn with lots of allergy attacks. I noticed the sneezing coughing attacks came strongest when the furnace around the corner from my computer fired up. It has been horribly cold this year, and the furnace fired often.
I called the local plumbing/heating dealer and was kind of brushed off. They had a lot of frozen burst pipes to deal with. After another day, I called again and told them they had rebuilt my boiler and they damn well better get over here to check it out.
Surprise..the "sniffer" found strong traces of Carbon Monoxide that was just below the level that would trip my in-home fire / CO detector.
They fixed the condensate trap which had dried out and let combustion gas into the rooms. They also found and fixed other leakages in the combustion area of the unit. (A condensate trap is often a tube from the bottom of the exhaust stack of the heater. It traps the moisture generated by the combustion to prevent rusting out the system. It is supposed to have a bit of water in the loop to prevent exhaust gas from entering the living area. In really cold dry periods that water evaporates and exhaust gas can enter the home through that tube.)
While  in the house they also checked all other combustion, live flame, appliances; water heater, stove, and clothes drier and found them to be safe.
Now, I am getting the weeks of bad air out of my system and hope to recover soon.
There are many types of condensate traps and they vary by manufacturer of the appliance. If you retained your installation manual the type may be explained in that. If you have gas appliances the local utility will often do a checkout for you.
Again, if you are having sinus or allergy problems in your home, the combustion appliances should be checked out.

Some good information here.

Our original seasonal scent is back! When we launched in March of 2013, Winter Spice was only available for 2 days, so we decided to give it a full run to share the warm fuzzies it generates. The fragrance is a warm, spicy, cozy blend of sweet orange, amaretto, and cinnamon that's great for those bitter winter days where you don't want to venture out into the frost.

Get thyself some fuzzies!

Happy birthday, Matthias Hohner

On this date in 1833, Matthias Hohner, who later made the famous harmonicas, was born. And if he hadn't been born, on what would Stan 'The Man' Musical have played "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"? And totally unrelated, since he definitely didn't need a harmonica, 'Old Blue Eyes' Frank Sinatra was also born on this date, in 1915.
