All Purpose Tool - great stocking stuffer

Today we painted the kitchen. I was going to the garage to get some tools. My wife said wait!

She gave me an early Christmas present - a Crescent Oddjob tool.

I am big fan of quality tools and have a garage full. But this little gizmo was a nice surprise.
it has a soft mallet face, A metal hammer face, A reversible driver with multiple bits and a razor knife (these store on the handle). Also came with a flexible bit adapter but I did not use it.

I used the bit and driver to remove the outlet and switch plates. The razor to cut the tape. The bit to open the paint and then the soft face mallet to seal it back up. It was pretty handy.

Here is a link to where she got it.

I have no connection to them. Just thought it was a handy tool that would make a good stocking stuffer.

New Arrival: Mühle Black Fibre 2.0

Delivered today on my doorstep: Mühle Vivo Black Fibre 2.0 ...

Certainly a good looking brush in the faux horn handle with the metal base.

First disappointment: measures on Connaught's site read 21/50mm; actual measures for the knot are 19/53mm.

The fibre feels very soft on the skin when dry; similar to the STF 2.0 brush that I also own...

Now I am the 2 Band badger kind of guy and only occasionally use my Mühle STF 2.0. I was intrigued by the looks of the black fibre brush and want to give it a try.

The brush is less dense than the STF. Hardly any backbone when dry (not a good sign for wet behavior). I will give her a spin tomorrow and will report back...

Truefitt & Hill Moonjava Best Badger

The T&H Moonjava Best Badger is a wonderful brush, with a colorful style reminiscent of Carnaby Street 1968 (or an Austin Powers movie). The ordering process through Silvertip Shave (Truefitt & Hill NA) was superb, with Todd helping me thru a few questions en route. The brush itself is ergonomically spot on - great balance in the hand, and very good face feel.

Measurements:

Handle 50mm
Knot 22 mm
Loft 48 mm

Breaking the brush in was effortless. It has yet to shed a hair. Taking my trusted Mitchell's Wool Fat for the test drive I do with all new brushes, this baby face lathered up nice and quickly. The first face lather had a bit above average on the scritchiness scale, but by shave 4, it is progressing very normally. Flow through is very good, and it doesn't soak up tons of water. Density is average, and backbone +average as you'd expect for a Best Badger. The packaging was similar to a Simpson's in a nice red box, and the brush very well wrapped in tissue.

For $49 USD it's a great value for a high quality brush. This Moonjava will be in my rotation for a long time. Yeah baby!

For the last year, Rod Sterling of Little Leviathan at the North Carolina Fairgrounds in Raleigh, North Carolina has been selling some of my straight razors. Little Leviathan is an Old Curio Shop. Rod also has hand-made brier wood pipes made by a local artisan.

Miranda and Rod are two very nice young people running this shop.

Been lurking on this and a few other razor forums for awhile, and figured I should finally register.

I'm a pastor in New Albany, Mississippi, who has a part time sharpening business, and enjoys playing/writing music (hence the handle).

I'm shaving with a vintage Hall & Lyon "Griffon" Special #05, which I just thinned, reprofiled, and rehoned last night. Using Mama Bear "Ye Olde Barbershoppe" shaving soap and The Art of Shaving Sandalwood Shaving Cream.

I started using a straight razor because I like old timey stuff and sharpening things, and straight razors present a special sort of challenge for the sharpener. My wife really enjoys the close shave : )

Print your favourite labels for IKEA and The Portugal Online Shop containers

I have started this project about an year ago, as you can see from the Portuguese wetshaving forum here. It started just for fun, and in a very (should I say rustic?) way. Then it became a fairly sized project. As of today, we have up to 70 labels.

So, from now on, you can print your favourite labels for these containers. It is a funny (and pretty) way to identify our soaps and creams.

If you need a specific label that isn't already on the project, feel free to request it, and I will do it. My intention is to update the project every three or four months. Next update should be on March 2014.

If you have any question, please, ask. Biggrin

So, here we go:

Pick the one that fits your needs. Download instead of open it in your web browser, as you might not see the pdf properly.

Enjoy it! Biggrin

Transplanting an SoC to another handle...

I have an awesome handle that currently has a TGN Synthetic knot.. I don't care for the knot. Without doubt, the Semogue Owners Club boar is my favorite brush...I have three.

I would love to transplant the SoC knot to the handle.

I am going to try to steam the Synth knot out of the handle. If it doesn't work, I'll do surgery. Been there, done that. I don't care if the Synth knot survives, it's the handle I want.

No idea how to get the SoC knot out of the handle other than surgery. I think steaming the boar will ruin it.

Any of you brush gurus care to weigh in with some thoughts and/or suggestions?

Barrister & Mann Kyovu Alcohol-Free Aftershave Splash

A few months ago Will of Barrister & Mann started a thread about what do members prefer in their aftershave splashes, alcohol or no alcohol. I wrote back that I prefer no alcohol. Before we get into what happened next, let me just give some background.

I have fairly sensitive skin, mainly rosacea on my cheeks and it can get pretty dry around my mouth during winter time. I've always liked splashes for their ease of use (splash and go!) and my favorites are alcohol-based ones like Krampert's Finest where the alcohol's sting and drying effects are lessened (Proraso is just deadly, causing my face to turn beet red). But on the whole, I generally use balms and thicker ones at that. My "desert island" balm is Pre de Provence Aftershave Balm, which is thick. But during summer time it'd be nice to use something lighter. I've used Lucky Tiger After Shave Tonic & Face Lotion which advertises itself as no-alcohol (more in a minute) but my face still gets dry.

Background out of the way and back to the story. After I answered Will's thread, he generously offered to send me a sample of his Kyovu Alcohol-Free Aftershave Splash (so we'll get the "legal disclaimer" language out of the way, I didn't buy it and I have no affiliation in any way, blah, blah, blah). Because we are both in the Boston area, we agreed to meet up.

It was fascinating talking with Will about all sorts of things, from how he got into soap-making(his family ran a bakery so he grew up in an environment of scents and baking/cooking/alchemy), to the development of online traditional shaving forums, to even his conversations with other artisans (nothing earth-shattering; I just love hearing about people producing goods through hard work and dedication). He told me some of his philosophies, including being transparent with Barrister & Mann (for instance he lists all of his ingredients, including breaking down the "scenting" ingredients, and not just general "fragrance" or "parfum", as he wants no one with say an allergy to a particular essential oil to be under an misapprehensions). He even told me about how even splashes billed as no-alcohol, like the aforementioned Lucky Tiger, can use alcohol as emulsifiers.

I agreed to use his Kyovu Alcohol-Free Aftershave Splash for a while and offer my thoughts. I hesitate to call this a review since Will told me he still might be tinkering with his formula. However, I have to say, its great! First, the appearances: it looks like lemon juice, very lightly yellow-colored and not viscous.

Since there is no menthol or alcohol, there is no sting or "cooling effect" nor is it an antihemorrhagic. However, it is calming and, with ingredients like aloe and witch hazel, it is antiseptic as well. it feels very good on my skin afterward. It goes on like a splash would, coats my face evenly, and absorbs as quickly as any splash should.

It doesn't leave my face tacky afterward, but does leave it feeling fresh and supple. Usually after a splash, I will use a facial moisturizer, but I don't feel the need to with this one. And, most importantly, it doesn't leave my skin "angry" or causes my rosacea to flare up.

I'm not very good with scents, but here is the description from B&M's site: "a blend of lemon, bergamot, lavender, rosemary, oakmoss, and patchouli." I definitely get the lemon first and foremost, which I like a lot; I generally prefer "brighter" and "cleaner" scents. I also pick up the bergamot, but before this starts to sound like a morning cup of tea, the other scents serve to weigh down the splash and give it an earthiness that keep it from smelling like Lemon Pledge. Personally I would prefer a lighter and airier scent profile, but I also see the potential pitfalls with trying for lighter and airier and ending up with "kitchen counter cleaner" scents. Will's layering of scents definitely has purpose and serves a purpose.

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hammamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Water, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Water, Juniperus Communis (Juniper) Flower Water, Salix Nigra (Willow) Bark Extract, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus/Nereocystis Leutkneana (Bull Kelp) Ferment Filtrate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Lactobacillus/Chenopodium Quinoa (Quinoa) Ferment Extract Filtrate, Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry) Fruit Extract, Allantoin, Caprylyl/Capryl Wheat Bran/Straw Glycosides, Aqua, Fusel Wheat Bran/Straw Glycosides, Polyglyceryl-5 Oleate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Citrus bergamia (Bergamot) Oil, Citrus limonium (Lemon) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Oil, Fragrance, Pogostemon cablin (Patchouli) Oil, Benzoic Acid

Hello Folks,

For sale today are two items. Prices include CONUS shipping and Paypal payments.

Feather AS-D2
Like new and flawless. I was curious to try this after I tried the AS-D1. If you have used the older AS-D1, two things are quite clear after using this newer version: it is noticeably more aggressive and also easier to dial in. Had a nice 2-pass shave today using this razor. Still not as aggressive as I would like. Asking $145

Include with original box/packing. More pics at AS-D2 pics

M&F Blonde Badger

I finally received my first M&F brush this morning, it's a Stubby 2XL in Blonde Badger I picked up here: http://shavenook.com/thread-m-f-stubby-x...nde-badger

I wasn't sure what to expect from the knot, people rave about it, but being the low end of M&F's knots I was expecting a low end experience. Man what a shock to use this brush. Great backbone, but ultra soft tips. I will post pics later, but this is going to be my go to brush for some time. Wow.

It is nearly impossible to find a quality spiral notebook designed for a left handed writer as myself. I ran across this website that produces notebooks for left handed writers. The review said " the paper in the notebook is fountain pen friendly. For those that have been gifted to be left handed they have a version for you too.
