A 1924 Gillette Old Type Pioneer Special Olympic
Here's my last acquisition, a 1924 Gillette Old Type Pioneer Special Olympic.
These were made in the USA for the French market, and perhaps other European markets. It is a special series commemorating the 1924 Olympics in Paris.
It includes a very curious instruction book in several languages, including English, Portuguese, French and Spanish, among others).
I really hope you like the photos!

Thater hair
Does anyone know where Thater gets their super-soft, nearly gel-tipped hair?
I want to have a custom brush made, but with the softest hair I can find, and so far Thater hair is the best in my opinion.
Or, any other suggestions on where to look?
Thanks much, gents.

FS: Shavemac D01 2-band #173 and Shavemac 3-band Silvertip, both 26mm
Hi Guys:
I have two gorgeous Shavemacs for sale. Both are in excellent condition and are not shedders.
1. Shavemac Custom D01 2 band. The nominal knot diameter is 26mm, but as with all Shavemacs, the actual diameter is a bit larger. Dimensions: 27mm knot x 50mm loft x 47mm handle height. The knot is beautiful and very dense and the low loft gives it excellent backbone. It has seen very little use.
The retail for this brush is $222. Your price, including conus shipping, is $155.
2. Shavemac 3-band Silvertip. This is a wonderfully soft and dense brush - but not floppy! This particular model isn't displayed on Shavemac's website, but the design and specs are the same as a Shavemac #439. It is also a nominal 26mm knot, but the actual knot size is about 28mm. Dimensions: 28mm knot x 61mm loft x 70mm handle height.
This is a great (and definitely superior) alternative to a Kent BK8 (denser, more backbone, softer tips). The only reason I am selling it is because I just bought an almost-identical Shavemac with a 31mm knot.
Retail for this brush is $165; your price, including conus shipping, is $105.

Whiting-Adams Vulcan 167
Whiting-Adams Vulcan 167
Hello friends. On this restoration I am going to post pictures along the months the restoration process lasts. Step by step.
This brush is a large brush. Handle height is 90 mm, and I can put a 30 mm knot on it. The handle has the 167 number engraved. I think it probably is the total height of the original brush (90 mm handle + 77 mm bristles)
Here the pics before cleaning, when I received it.
Well, here we go. Starting the work. Ferrule was not glued. It had a cork gasket at top of the handle. And the inner ring of the ferrule was oxidized.
After cleaning the inner ring, finally I decided to extract it. With caution.

The work is done until here. More in coming weeks.

From Defective to Enhanced
We have all seen the advertisements of a certain company that is selling brushes with "defective handles" on a certain auction site. Well I decided to get one of these brushes to see how "defective" the handle was. The company had a statement about the handle on the selling post which is quoted as follows: "I select these shaving brush for sales, because the handle is not very important for shaving brush, I hope these shaving brush will be sold best while the Global economic slowdown, so if you didn't mind the handle, it is worth to buy, thanks!"
Well I understand their point that the handle is a tool to get the business end of the brush, the knot, to apply lather to the skin, however in terms of long term use the handle is important to the user both ergonomically as well as aesthetically. So I decided to take the defective brush with a handle that had a very deep and visible crack, and use the knot as a donor.
In addition I had received in a purchase of old handles a plain stained wooden handle which had a 20 mm hole that could accommodate such a knot as is. I don't know what wood or stain was used, but it had potential. The problem was that the handle made simply with no adornment of any type. So first, I went and found a concho in the shape of a 1943 Liberty Lady U.S. Dime. I went ahead and prepared the hole in the base and then proceeded to apply clear epoxy all over the handle as a finish both outside and inside the handle and applied the concho to the base and let it sit and cure to a nice shiny finish that will keep water out. I loaded up the inside of the handle with some ballast to increase the weight of the finished brush. Next I went and cut out the knot from the defective donor handle and epoxied the knot into the recipient handle. Here is the finished product and it lathers up very nicely and fits well in my hand.
P.S. In the final analysis, I guess I did mind the handle.
