West L.A. Shaver

Hi, all. I've come over from the other shaving forums on the encouragement from Phil, and am very glad I did. What a fresh, dynamic site this is, with some old names I'm familiar with, and new names I hope to get to know better. The experience level of the members here is quite impressive, and though I've been around the block, I hope to get clued in even more from the learned fellows within.

I've been wetshaving for six years, and in that time I've used many of the popular brands of shave goods: Simpsons, Shavemac, Savile Row, Kent, and a Rudy Vey custom; classic Gillette and Schick DE's; Schick injectors; the Three T's plus other software. The last couple years the fever has been dampened through forces beyond my control, but now it has returned with renewed passion.

Currently, I'm slowly ramping up my acquisitions. Rather than tell you what I have, since everything is in flux, I'll mention what I'm looking for and hope to settle on (finally):

For brushes, I'd love to get an M&F Chief, a Grosvenor LE 2-band mod from Simpsons, another in a long line of Savile Rows, and hopefully a synthetic that fulfills its promise (to me).

Razors: I was big-time into injectors before the NOS blade supply dried up, so am now looking for a mild-ish DE that will work on sensitive skin. Candidates so far are the Merkur Progress, and one of the stainless steel models.

Creams, Soaps & Aftershaves: The one cream I really like is the T&H Rose. I currently favor soft Italian soaps, but since P.160 is no more, I'm trying out various RazoRock varieties. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd get another bottle of the Harris Pink splash because I'm into subtle scents -- the only exception being Bay Rum and Bay Rum with Lime.

So, I hope as time goes by to be able to contribute to the knowledge base here, and have no question that I will learn a lot from all of you. I look forward to seeing you all around campus.

Regards,

Well Dang It

Yesterday I got out my very old Olympus 35 mm camera (model FTL). I had bought a roll of BW and was going to shoot some Thanksgiving photos.

And the shutter stuck! Dang it!

So, now I'm thinking about buying a decent 35mm film camera with a zoom lens suitable for people photos. And I'm looking for recommendations and ideas of what to look for as well as where. I'm concerned that eBay may not be the best venue.

I just want to shoot some BW images of family and have real negatives and silver prints.

All help appreciated.

Thanks

Used only twice. I had wanted to try this highly praised Álvarez Gómez shaving cream, and I'm glad I did, but it wasn't different enough to sway me from my intention to switch from creams to soaps. It's a wonderful cream, with a light and complex scent and great cushion and glide properties. 200ml. Shipped CONUS for $25.

It seems supplies of this cream have dried up in the UK. Has this gone the way of the much missed soap stick Mad ?

Not the usual condition of razors I see. This one was clean!
Broke it down, cleaned the usual rust, polished up the blade and scales, added a Nickel pin with SS washers to look original.
The logo being so shallow looked terrible with paint in it so I left it out.

Wostenholm Wedge

Recently cleaned up this blade along with another etched Wosty.
I liked the original , but toasted , scales on the razor so I duplicated them , holding the thickness in the taper to 200ths MM. The color is a close match to the originals but translucent with a tobacco color with dark streaks. Beautiful in person but doesn't photograph well.
I kept the sides perfectly flat which reflect everything and the small perimeter bevel catches light nicely.
I reused the original wedge to finish it off.

Bullgoose Shaving Supplies was fortunate enough to secure a large shipment of this very hard to find premium shaving cream. Presented in a heavy glass bowl, St. James of London Founders Reserve Shaving Cream oozes class. It whips up into a rich creamy lather that is ultra slick and the skin conditioning properties are out of this world. I have been using this cream myself for the past several weeks and I love the stuff!

Like a fine vintage wine, St James shave cream formulations are matured for longer in their barrels, promoting and enriching their moisturizing properties. The warm mineral notes of Spicy Pepper sweetened with Bay Rose, Geranium and Patchouli wrapped round Atlas Cedar to enhance the earthiness will give you a soothing shave. Free from Alcohol, SLES & Parabens.

Review of Custom Rudy Vey R7 / Muhle Synthetic

$

I recently acquired my first synthetic brush. I opted not to get a Muhle because I found the loft on them too high for my preference. For a variety of reasons I chose not to get the FS Pur Tech. I had decided to wait for the Simpson synthetic when I read that Rudy Vey had Muhle synthetic knots in stock. This settled the matter for me and I ordered one of his R7 handles with a 25mm knot. I had him set the knot at 53mm.

Rudy's R7 handle is one of my favorite designs. This one is called a tangerine/gold swirl. The handle is 60mm tall, with a diameter of 37mm at the base. The knot diameter measures 26mm at the top of the handle. Rudy set the loft at precisely the 53mm I requested. The quality of Rudy's handles and his level of service are well known in the shaving forums, and this custom project was no exception.

This is the brush immediately after I took it out of the box.

I usually face lather with creams. The one exception is that I keep a tub of green Proraso and use it occasionally. When I use the Proraso I load the brush and face lather. I decided to use the new synthetic brush on two successive days, once with cream and once with the Proraso soap.

Before lathering I rubbed the dry brush against my face and was amazed at how soft it was. This is softer than any dry silvertip, two-band, or Manchurian I have ever rubbed against my face.

The first day I used TOBS sandalwood cream in a Dirty Bird Bill Bowl. I wet the brush slightly immediately before lathering. There is a small learning curve in terms of the amount of water to use. The brush produced abundant lather very quickly. I didn't time it but I got the sense that I've never produced lather so fast.

The next day it was the Proraso soap. I loaded the brush then took it to face lathering. Unlike bowl lathering with the cream, I didn't get the sense that I produced lather any faster. However, the brush certainly produced abundant lather.

The brush has exceptionally soft tips, which I expected based on everything I had read. I did not feel any scritch. I was not sure what to expect in terms of backbone, and was pleasantly surprised. This brush has backbone. What qualifies as sufficient backbone is a subjective concept. At the present time all my brushes are either 2-bands or boar. I know what I like in backbone and this brush has enough of it to meet my criteria.

The 53mm loft works very well, and I don't see the need to set these as high as Muhle does. I believe the loft on this 25mm knot could possibly be set to 50mm without compromising performance.

The brush dries exceedingly fast. I never use the same brush two days in a row and have found that some brushes are not fully dry after a day. I used this brush on two consecutive days, with the first shave being on Thanksgiving Day. I was home all day and checked on the brush periodically. I didn't formally check the clock but this brush dries in less than a day. Under the right circumstances I can see it drying in hours.

After two shaves, there was no sign of splay and the knot looked the same as the day it came out of the box.

Over the years I've tried boars, most higher grades of badger from the major brush makers, and now a synthetic. After experiencing all these brushes, I can say that I've only had two "WOW" moments. One was the first time I tried a 2-band brush. The other is the first time I tried this synthetic. This new generation of synthetic is a definite game changer in my estimation. I don't see myself giving up on my boars and 2-bands, because part of the fun of this hobby is using different brushes. However synthetics will eventually assume an equal place in my rotation

FS: Straight Razor Designs Scuttle

I'm gradually decreasing the size of my den somewhat, and today I am offering for sale an excellent Straight Razor Designs one-piece scuttle. The bowl is 3 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep, just right for small to medium brushes, with a spiral swirl pattern to aid in lather building. The scuttle stands 3.75 inches tall, and it weighs approximately 1 lb. 14 ounces. Its water reservoir holds 11 ounces of water, plenty to keep your lather nice and warm through a 2-pass shave. This handmade scuttle is in great mint condition, with no chips, cracks, or other defects. This particular model in brown earth tones is no longer made, but it is closest in size and style to their Model 625 Mother Earth, which retails, with shipping, at $58. You can have this one for $45 shipped CONUS, just in time for winter.

Yup,, you see everything crossing my bench. This is what I got as you see it. OK. A bit of Mag Wheel polish since half my work is already done and I can call it a win! Yeah, right , if I was only so lucky.
So I polished up the blade and it came out nice I think. The specks are on the penny ,, not my blade.
And since it's rather manly at 15/16ths I wanted something a bit wilder looking than straight black scales. I used the streaked black horn , sometimes called feathered for the scales. Has a bit of a wild look to it somehow.
I then used an Elk Horn antler wedge where you can see the pores as a pure Ivory wedge just wouldn't fit the theme here.
I also used 5/64th pins and washers as the typical 1/16th ones looked just silly on a massive blade.
Man, does this thing cut. Oh My!

I think we gents need to do a better job of making our presence known on Pinterest. The last stat I saw stated that 80% of Pinterest users are women.

I had little understanding or um...interest in Pinterest until a while after my wife started using it. But after poking around a bit, I found some pretty cool boards including grooming tools, barber shops, everyday carry, and travel.

Here's a link to our board if you'd like to check it out:

Straight razor article

Gentlemen,

From time to time I write a short article for a local publication on the world of traditional shaving. These are meant for the general public, hoping to win some converts. My space is limited to 700 words, about three double-spaced typewritten pages, so I can't get that specific. My topics vary from straights razors, DE razors, brushes, soaps, and so on. Here is the latest one. I trust it will be of some help for our members contemplating straight razor shaving. Enjoy, and thanks for reading.
