Rockwell 6c Vs Merkur 34 HD

I am using muhle r89 for 2 years and i find it comfortable but not so efficient. i tried aggressive razors and found it too much for my ultra sensitive skin.
I read great reviews about the 6c and 34 hd. I tried a Lord L6 that is a merkur clone and loved it so i guess i will like the 34 hd . my question is whether the 34hd is a step up from the R89 or
should i add another 30% in price and go with the rockwell? the rockwell has raving reviews but i find it weird to play with plates changing during a shave.

Cold River Soap Works GLIDE tester!!

Good day everyone,

Let me start by thanking Larry for reaching out and putting the time and effort into this project.  Larry is too humble to hype and glamorize his products and I appreciate his tactic of just letting things speak for themselves.

When Larry asked me to test his new soap base I said yes and was skeptical as his current formula in my opinion is pretty solid.  That said I was not provided any real information on the soap.  Not until after I had used it for a week did Larry and I talk about how different this soap is.  I am telling you straight away this is not like anything else on the market currently available...So heres some detail...

The tub of soap that was provided was unscented.  This too me is very important because if you have a pleasant olfactory response your mind subconsciously will fill in the performance defects and give a false positive.  A neutral scent provided my review to receive merits based only on performance.

What you get in the tub is a soap that is void of any water... It is not an ingredient in this soap.  The consistency is a hard croap.  I imagine it will set up and be quite firm over time.

Lather:  As with all of Larry's soap this lathers very easily.  I did not bloom the soap but rather just began using a hydrated badger brush.  I swirled for about thirty seconds, adding bits of water here and there.  I went to the face and continued to lather adding water.  I will tell you that this soap will take A LOT of water and has a very wide range of effective saturation.  What I settled on was what looked like vanilla ice cream melted from a Friday night movie marathon on the couch with the dog..  As a test of lather stability prior to my first shave I palm lathered the soap and making the same consistency I just described, squeezed the knot out and set the glob of lather in a clean dry mug and left it there.  The next morning, the day of my first shave I inspected the lather and you all know that gas station chili that you look at, scrape the top off and there lies the good stuff....  That is what I experienced.  The lather looked the same, had a mild crust on it and when I poked through it still had a creamy lather.  So lather stability in my book receives five stars.

Shave:  I have made mention in other threads I have very sensitive skin but facial hair like copper wire.  Over the years I have established I need a very very slick soap or I will get razor burn.  I typically use XPEC or Santa Maria Novella, Baume. Be is also in this mix and in my opinion are the three slickest soaps on the market.  What I experienced with this soap is a startle and sudden disappointment in my own ability.  I thought I forgot to put a blade in my razor.  No I did not!!  I literally did not feel the blade cutting my hair.  The slickness of this soap is hard to believe.  I finished with my first pass and in an experiment I splashed my face off with water, rubbed the little lather that was left on my neck around the rest of my face and did a second pass across the grain.  The razor slid effortlessly across my face, NO drag period.  I rinsed off for the third, squeezed the left over lather out of the knot and said what the hell, rubbed my face and did a third pass against the grain.  To my dismay the razor streaked across my face.  I rinsed off and had absolutely no sign a razor had just been drug across my face three times.  This is a very bold claim but the slickness of this soap is higher than XPEC and SMN. Period.

Post shave:  I live in Nevada and it is very dry here.  I typically use some type of balm at least three out of the four days I shave.  Reading the ingredient list the skin conditioning properties should be more than adequate so again to give this soap a run for its money I chose to use no aftershave splash, balm or anything just rinsed my face with water and towel dried.  Went to work for ten hours got home and throughout the day I never had any dry spot itchy or really any feeling, face just felt good.  The post shave of this soap is impressive in the sense it is neutral.  If you have oily or dry skin, like a balm or a splash this soap leaves the face in a very neutral position for either.  My face did not feel heavy or greasy or overly dry.  It just felt conditioned and balanced.

As a conclusion the two areas that this soap shines and I am talking shines like the sun is the slickness.  It is really unbelievable how slick this soap is.  Second is post shave.  I don't know any other word other than neutral to describe how my face was left feeling.  It just felt balanced and healthy.

I know I have made some pretty bold statements and there are endless people giving glowing reviews like mine but I would encourage you guys to give this a shot.  I truly think Larry has made a soap base that is like nothing else on the market.  I have tried all the big name brands and all the artisan brands, some that get hype beyond belief and I can honestly say this soap is a game changer.

I used the same brush and razor for the last two weeks.  Morris & Forndran 24mm Polo, Charcoal Goods solid bar level one with a Feather blade.

Well Done Larry

Like new Muhle R41 Twist for sale. This is only a couple months old and was used a handful of times. I am selling because I now realize I would like the ability to use an aftermarket handle so I would like to buy the head assembly only (the base plate and handle are attached on the Twist). No box is included.

I am asking $35 shipped to the U.S.
Only trade I would be interested in would be a brand new R41 head.

Vintage Butterscotch Simpson AS2A - Satisfaction

$

Yes: it was ME that bought this beauty from that well-known auction site. I was the only bidder. Including postage, in US dollars: $175. I saw a used one of these sell for that price 5 years back, so I think it was a reasonable price to pay. I don't really know. Hope so.

This one is in the original box and, according to the seller from the North of England, it was never used. He tells me it was his father's, and that it dates to about 1967 - the same year as The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction". And yes, I am satisfied.

I am far from an expert on these brushes, and I believe they were part of an original M series (?) I have also read different accounts of the  meaning of the lettering, claiming that the "AS" means "Alex Simpson" (founder of Simpson brushes) or "Abraham Strauss", for whom the AS series was manufactured. Very ambiguous.

I know there are AS2 brushes and AS2A, possibly others with the 'crown' or 'lip' at the top of the handle. I don't understand the difference, and was wondering if anyone could point that out, or show pictures side-by-side? I think perhaps the AS2A is longer. Maybe it has a different knot?? Does anyone know anything about the history and evolution of these lovelies?

Pictures (with more to come when I receive it here in Sydney from the UK, and clean and smarten it up):

Kent V6 and V10 Comparison

$
0
0
I am lucky enough to own 2 Kent butterscotch brushes in original condition: a V6 and a V10. It is difficult to date these, however, the closest I have come up with is 1960, going on some research that I conducted. Some say 1970s, but my money is on the earlier decade. As you can see, they each have the same "Vase" handle (hence "V"). Both have lost their decals (but I'm woking on that).

The V6 has the following measurements:

Knot: 23mm
Loft: 46mm
Handle height:51mm
Total height: 97mm
Diameter of Base: 33mm

The handle isn't stamped, but my research shows it to be "Pure Badger".

The V10 has the following measurements:

Knot: 26mm

Loft: 58mm
Handle height: 54mm
Total height: 112mm
Diameter of base: 37mm

The handle is stamped "Pure Badger".

As you can see, the lofts are very distinct, and the V10 has slightly finer tips. My speculation is that the longer the loft, the different the hair requirements, unless in different periods the hair was sourced from different places. My research, however, indicates that the larger the Kent V-series brush, the whiter the tips. The V10 pictured here has a loft/knot ratio of 2.23:1, while the V6 has a ratio of 2:1. That difference means the smaller brush is ever so slightly scrubbier, which is nice when that's what you want. The larger brush is wonderful for bowl/cream lathering, but I can't imagine ever wanting to use an even larger brush: the loft on this one is pretty damn BIG. The smaller one is good for face lathering, using hard soaps or 'croap'.

I realise that going by the handle they don't look that distinct, size-wise, but the camera is distorting things a little. The lofts look very different, as you can see.

Favorite House-Filling Scent Combos?

Not counting EdP/EdT products, my favorite heavily scented combo is starting with Tabac soap and ending with Pashana Original aftershave. Both products can be smelled from a different room even with the bathroom door closed. I consider myself lucky that my wife really enjoys the smell on both of these heavy hitters.

Do you guys have any favorite combos when you want a nice heavy dose of aroma?

I think we're done with Photobucket.

I'm curious to know what others here consider to be the best alternative for the long-run. That means viable business model and a trustworthy ethos. Not looking to get something for nothing, but don't want to set ourselves up again to have photos held hostage for ransom in perpetuity.

FS: Smoking Pipes

Looking to sell a few pipes that are absolutely wonderful, but I need to make room for new acquisitions.

Selling as a bundle to reduce the hassle of shipping. If I cannot do that, then I may piece them out.

J.M. Boswell x 5

Dave McLary x 3

J.M. Boswell is an excellent pipe craftsman. All have a good draw and smoke well.

The Mclary pipes are Algerian Briar and the black one is morta (5400 year old bog oak). Dave McLary is out of Indiana and was mentored by Tracy Mincer's son several years ago. All have an open draw (5/32) and smoke great.

Retail value of the group is appx. $1200.

You can own them for $475. That puts you at $59.37 per pipe which is an absolute steal.

CONUS Only.

Payment vial Paypal, includes USPS Priority Shipping with tracking.
