One of the most beautiful handle creation - at least for me - is the Lee Sabini Alibaba handle. The Rooney counterpart to Simpson's Persian Jar used to be available in three sizes. The largest knot measured about 22mm.

First appearing with the amazing Heritage 3 band hair and then followed by the equally stunning 2 Band Heritage knots.

Those times are long gone and I am lucky to own one Alibaba of each Heritage knot.

Today I can add to this collection the upsized  creation of Lee and Brad Sears: the Alibaba in Finest with a 26/50mm knot in beautifully grained faux ivory with a tortoise ring.

Palm lather reveals a resilient knot with soft tips. Will be on deck tomorrow.

Who makes these decisions...?

Those of you that know me, know that I am a fan of old-school soaps/fragrances/razors. I have been devouring the recent appearance of a stash of NOS Art of Shaving products. Most are familiar with the ebay seller and the AOS Tallow pucks, but lately there have been a few sellers marketing the Tallow Lemon and Lavender Pucks. Also, some really magnificent Balms/Gels/and Oils. Now, there have been the threads lamenting the recipe changes of Geo F. Trumper, Penhaligons, Williams, etc. etc. So I won't start a new one.
So here are my choices as I see them; I can go to the AOS Store and for $50, purchase a bowl and soap that won't lather, OR I can peruse the auction site and buy a Lavender Puck with wooden Bowl for $29.95 shipped. AND...it lathers! And how does it lather.
So, here I am, waiting for my wife to get ready, see, it's our 33 wedding anniversary, and we're going out to dinner, and thinking to myself, What knuckleheads are running these companies anyway? Can you say: "New Coke"?
I am out of here...
Thanks for reading.

Phoenix DOC Stainless Review

For the past 7 or 8 years I had been 'out of the loop' as far as DE shavers go. When I got into this insanity 10 years ago I stuck with vintage Gillettes until I discovered the slant (twisted head) DEs and then if it wasn't a slant I wasn't interested. Finally got into straight razors a year or so later and was consumed with that up until about a year ago.

The Wolfman craze piqued my curiosity which led me to the Timeless, Blackbird, Wunderbar among others. So when I first heard of the DOC Stainless a week ago I jumped on it like a kangaroo. This razor is in a class with the 2011 Muhle R-41 for aggressiveness. Build quality is very good, and finish is not bad. Not on par with Wolfman of course, nor Timeless, but better than a Rockwell 6s. Maybe equal, or slightly behind a Blackbird machine finish.
The pins that secure the blade are reminiscent of the Above the Tie, and loading it the way I do the Guerrilla, with the top cap pins up, insert blade, lay base plate on that, and thread the handle, works easily. Blade exposure was equal on my copy.

With the 3 1/2" (89mm) bomb tip handle balance is very good, and the razor handles comfortably for me. Plenty of blade exposure, gap, and feel with this one. I used a brand new Feather stainless and got a bbs 2 pass, irritation free effortless shave. I'm not sure if my technique has improved, or it it is the razor, but I didn't have that 'walking on eggs' feeling I used to get with the R-41. Regardless of the finish, this is such an exciting and satisfying shaver that any machine marks are easily ignored. Very happy with this razor. I can be confident that if I ever thin the herd this one is a keeper.

Just curious, what happened to Penhaligon's talcum powders.  I have been using them as a deodorant/antiperspirant for a couple of years now.  Went to order some more and I can't find them.  Is this tied into the baby powder hysteria?
