Simpson or Artisan

I was involved in a discussion on another forum where a member asked for a brush recommendation. He wanted a brush for bowl lathering with good backbone at <$75. I recommended a Simpson Colonel X2L based on my personal experience with this brush. I have gone through a lot of brushes in  boar, badger, and synthetic including some very high end badgers from Shavemac and M&F. I have whittled down my collection to Simpson Colonel, Berkeley, and 55 in Best Badger. They just work for me in terms of lather making ability and face feel. I am not knocking any other brushes out there. I never had a bad one of all the ones I tried.
After my X2L recommendation one of the senior members of the group who is also makes brushes made the statement that he recommends an artisan brush over any mass produced one. I asked if he included Simpson as mass produced. He stated that Simpson made their brushes like everyone else just with more people in production. I needed to correct his statement and said that unlike artisans (with a few notable exceptions), Simpson knots were hand formed and tied where artisan knots were sourced ready made. This did not go over well. My point here is that there are plenty of choices out there and that Artisan does not equal better by default. It all boils down to personal preference. If I wanted a Dodger Blue handle with Clayton Kershaw's number on it, I would go to an Artisan. When I want a nice dense scrubby brush for face lathering then Simpson is my first choice.

1912's comparison- small vs more common head

I have posted a few comments on 1912s that I have offered for sale or have seen on the BST. I was asked what dimensions my 1912 was since I called it a small head version. Well, I figured it was about time to do a little explaining. The 1912 is my preferred SE, and yes I have tried a Streamline. Here is a comparison of two different versions of the 1912.

I have seen three variations of the 1912. A small head with a curved cap, a small head with creased cap, and then the more common taller head with creased cap.

I am no expert but these are my beliefs. If I am wrong, please correct me. It is my understanding that Gem produced the 1912 and then other companies (Ever Ready, Star, etc..) started to produce them. I do not know if Gem was purchased or sold the rights to the design.

Here is what I believe to be true.

Gem small head with curved cap was the first produced. These are very very comfortable. Hands down my favorite, although I do not have one as I traded it to another member here Facepalm  . I believe these to be the first, as I have never seen these produced by any other company beside Gem. Some of these are not stamped Gem on the back. Some of these caps can be seen on the Damaskeene.

Gem small head with creased cap. Later production, and I also have never seen one that isn't a Gem. These commonly have Brooklyn stamped inside. A little more aggressive than the curved head model, but still very comfortable.

Common taller head version- the latest model produced. I have seen these produced by numerous companies including Gem, Star, Ever Ready etc. These are the most aggressive of the bunch but still comfortable. The British version falls into the taller head version. The British model being slightly more aggressive than the US model.

I only have two 1912s left, but I can illustrate the differences (minus the curved cap)

On the left is an Ever Ready British 1912 on the right is a Gem 1912. The Gem pictured may be a curved cap version as it does not have a crease. But I recall the cap on the curved head version to be more pronounced. This may be a 4th version.

The difference being on how tall the head is. I lined up the hinges on these two. Notice how much taller the British 1912 is. It is easily seen when comparing the two dimples/rivets and the distance to where the handle screws in.

Now here is the creased cap I mentioned. The Gem does not have a crease, but isn't as curved as the curved head model I remember. I do not have one to do a direct comparison. You can see how the reflection changes at the crease.

I hope this helps clarifying the difference between some 1912 models.

ATT bronze atlas- this was one of 2 or 3 leftover after the bronze sets were sold. I paid $75 shipped from Stan directly and I'm asking the same price shipped. It is starting to develop some patina, which I hope I had displayed well in the pics.

Poisson European grey - bought here last year for I believe $60 but it could have been $55. It has been lightly used and I am the second owner, comes with box as well. The knot moves a touch when dry, but when wet it does not move at all, I've seen this issue a few times on the forums with Poisson's, does not shed at all. The p on pur is slightly crooked on the handle as well.
Asking $50

Simpson colonel x2l- bought on the forum from lance, it was advertised to shed once every shave or 2. I haven't even touched it since I bought it about a year ago. Its just been sitting, so its time to pass it on, paid $40
Asking $40

Hoffritz slant- asking $100 shipped. Has a couple spots where some of the plating is no longer there, those are the very obvious black marks in the pictures, otherwise the plating has a very nice mirror finish. I have not polished anything with polish or compound, I disinfected the razor with barbicide and wiped it down with a microfiber cloth. The case on the inside is near mint and the blade holders are in excellent shape. The case on the outside has some marks and minor scratches that could be polished out but I did not try.
I love this razor but it was given to me by an ex and our relationship didnt finish all that well so I am passing along this razor.

I'm interested in getting a new lather bowl and this bowl seems to be a decent one at the price point. On their website they don't have a pic of the inside ridges. Does anyone have any pics of it ? Thanks

I am getting into the new Gem style razors. I have a question. What, besides price, is the difference between Gem PTFE coated blades and Personna Gem coated blades?

Woohoo...the wait is over.

Rocnel SE-G

Over the past 6 or 7 years, there has been a vocal group of Gem razor enthusiasts pushing for a modern stainless steel Gem style razor. This sort of razor presented design challenges for machining until Murat of Rocnel cracked that nut with the ingenious design of the Rocnel SE-G razor -a fully machined stainless steel Gem style razor with a black titanium coating.

Not only will this razor provide a close and smooth shave due to the rigid and sharp PTFE coated Gem blades, you will also want to add it to your shave cave for its cool gadget factor.

This is a vintage Cussons Imperial Leather 'Chubby' shaving soap refill with a plastic holder, in its original box.  It can be held in the hand or grated into a bowl.  I think it probably is 75g.  This classic soap is virtually impossible to find.  $20 shipped CONUS, $17.50 plus actual shipping cost elsewhere.
