My Realization

Allright here goes.  I'm almost 57 years old.  Been shaving since '75.  Joined the "wet shaving" DE resurgence in 2013 with a Muhle R89.  Have since owned/acquired an ASD2, Two Fatip Grandes, numerous Techs both pre and post war Canadian and U.S., Long Comb NEWs both Canadian and U.S., 40's Superspeeds, '56 Superspeeds, and a Merkur 23c.  I've been a member of this and another large shaving forum since and have come to my own conclusions about DE razors.  Yes they are superior to over priced carts (for me).  Yes, there are better and worse soaps.  Personally, I don't find a big difference in blades.  Derbys work fine so I bought a thousand for about $70 bucks.  7 cents a blade.  Williams is cheap and poor quality.  Geo F. Trumper is expensive and poor quality.  Cella is a nice tallow soap and performs well.  Tabac is a nice tallow soap and performs equally well if not better and has matching fragrance based products in their line.  Beyond that, I can now get a perfect BBS shave with any razor.  Ya, ya gotta be careful with a Fatip.  Ya...an ASD2 is mild.  But at the end of the day (an over-used expression) the blade shaves your face not the razor.  All razor blades are sharp.  A lot of the debate of the minutiae of this gap vs. that gap, or handles, or blah blah blah is nonsense.  Traditional master barbers admit that hot towels and warm lather are for the comfort and luxury pampering experience of the client but that cold shaving is superior as it's the soap and water that prep and hydrate the beard hair, not the heat.  It's just shaving.  For the record though, I must use a post war Tech (to avoid the dreaded "blade chatter" that I've never experienced) and hold the razor at precisely 32.678 degrees with a Derby blade hand stropped on Levis brand denim while facing magnetic north and listening to Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas to achieve true BBS which only lasts twenty one minutes due to my extremely  sensitive skin and extremely  manly, very very coarse beard.   Cheers.

Assortment of vintage blades. 85 blades for $70.

Will throw in the 14 Gillette Spoilers, just opened, without a case making it 99 blades in the lot.

These blades will last for weeks! I averaged around 30 shaves per blade with these vintage blades compared to the 6-10 shaves with a modern blade.

Wet Shaving Products Store Visit

Last week while on a travel adventure I had the pleasure of visiting the Wet Shaving Products World Headquarters in Chandler Arizona. To rewind slightly WSP was first on my radar with Phil's release of the Asylum Shave Works Soaps and Aftershaves. The ASW products are superb performers so with interest peaked I hit the WSP website and realized while on vacation I would be less than an hour drive away. Arriving at WSP storefront I was greeted by the complete line of products and Lee himself who emerged from the back where he was honing some straight razors, a service he provides and has been practicing before his starting the product line.
It was a pleasure to see and sample all the products in person. I even got to tour the production area which was filled with ingredients, scales, bottles, beakers, buckets, curing racks...picture commercial kitchen meets chemistry lab. Lee takes his craft very seriously as evidenced by his facility. Lee was very kind to answer questions and make the visit more enjoyable than imagined. Of course I left with a nice stash of product and added it to my ASW collection. More purchases are likely to followSmile
[Image: iVer6tv.jpg]
I would encourage anyone in the area or traveling in proximity to make time for the stop. You will be in for a treat. Lee is a TSN Site Supporting Vendor and has a great website that can found under the TSN site links/vendor list.

Pains me, but sometimes it's best to listen to the queen's nose...in hopes that she would like the Diamond, I stacked up on these as I thoroughly enjoy the scent, but she doesn't. I'd rather trade for another B&M, New Cold River Soapworks soap, or sell it.

Method of payment is Paypal.

Shipping is not included. It is $3 for shipping to CONUS. International ask for prices.

- Unused/New B&M Diamond - $19 (retails for the same...or $19.99 to be exact)

Haircut Harry youtube channel

Does anyone else here watch Haircut Harry on Youtube??  I actually just discovered him and I love what he does... he literally travels the world visiting barber shops getting fresh cuts and wet shaves.  It's a phenomenal channel.  I am hoping he does more wet shave episodes although the haircut only episodes are really cool.  I may try to contact him and suggest more wet shave episodes.

Maybe; if others here are interested, we can start a petition list I can send to him (once I find contact info) to show him there is a heavier interest in seeing wet shave episodes.

Thoughts??

How Often Do You Change Blades?

$
0
0
I have always always finished using all the blades in one box before moving on to the next. But, as I shaved this morning, I wondered if changing blades ever time I shaved would effect my shave any. For example,  I used Rapira Stainless Steel morning (first shave using the Rapira), and then changed my blade to a Feather blade next time I shaved.

So, my question is do you think shaving this way will have an effect on my shave or not?
Also, I am wondering if anyone has used this method of shaving.

Vladimir Ferdman V7 x Shavemac 3 band silvertip

Dear intrepid brush fanatics, please meet the Vladimir Ferdman V7 handle complemented with a Shavemac 3 band premium silvertip knot. The handle and knot were sourced separately and put together with a little elbow grease.

If you haven't seen many of these in the wild, you're in luck. I stumbled upon Vladimir's creations on a pen turning site, while looking for resins and materials for a Geoff Anderson brush. The quality of Vladimir's work shone through and I knew one would be in my near future.

I contacted Vladimir via Etsy and he got back to me near instantly. His attention to detail and questions on the handle was impressive, we discussed dimensions, bore sizes and small changes to handle design. Once these details were finalized, the handle was ready in two days!

V7 in Black Peacock resin:

Vladimir's handle shape is superb and the handle is finished to a liquid sheen, yes his work is that good! The black peacock resin is beautiful and shimmers when you rotate the brush, I love the color nuances in this material.

Here's a side pic, notice Vladimir's logo on the base of the handle.

Bernd's craftsmanship:

Bernd's knot is just incredibly soft and there's something about 3 band silvertip  Blush

Thank you to Vladimir and Bernd for making this happen. This is the most beautiful brush in my collection.

Thanks for reading.

Everyone should go custom at least once...!!!

When i took the plunge into the marvelous hobby of traditional wet shaving i had no idea whatsoever of what i was getting into. All i knew was that it was retro, and i love all things retro. Sometimes i think that i was born 100 years too late. Jeje. Besides that, i also knew that i was not going to be the bassman of ZZ Top, and that i did not want to sell hunting equipment. At the same time, i hated shaving. I did it for more than three decades without soap, sometimes without water, never against the grain, and with the same cart for six months or more. Then, maturity sets in, and i began to do mental judo with the things that i dont like, but have to do anyway. The first was handwriting. The second was shaving.

So i started learning, and buying. And i got a pretty good case of acquisition desorder. So, after nine straights and ten safeties, both vintage and modern, i decided to put an end to the disorder with a custom brush. And an idea was born. That was about the middle of february. One of my favorite hobbies is cruising in my sailboat Hakuna Matata. So, my brush was going to be a tribute to yatching. It was going to be made out of teak and holly, the woods usted to make the soles and terminations on boats.

So, I contacted the owner of Paladin. He responded promptly, and gently turned me down because his operation did not lend itself for the kind of brush that i wanted. Generous as he is, he pointed me in the right direction. He suggested that i should contact Robert Carey, of zenshave.com.

Go to his page and see his capabilities for yourself.

In my letter i told him what i had in mind: a brush made out of teak and holly. Those are the woods they use to make cabin soles and terminations in sailboats and yatchs in general.

I dont know if the following is true: i dont think he takes on every custom job he is offered. He only do the ones that he finds interesting. Lucky me, he found my yacht tribute brush project up to par and offered me a price. I found it extremely reasonable.

He was very accommodating. He asked me what features i wanted in the brush. I told him that my idea was limited to the woods used, that he was the artist and gave his creativity a green light. He came up with the shape of the brush and the checkering at the neck, and since i love firearms i love that touch.

He sent me photos of the construction process and even sent me shavings of the teak and holly he used after the lathe. At the end he came up with the idea to put an image at the base of the brush. I told him to put a boat's helm. I never imagined how good the final product was going to be. It is even better than i ever dreamed.

When the brush finally came in, the very first thing that happened when i opened the box was....: it fell from my hands and landed butt first on the tile floor. After i picked it up i said: why worry? There was not a dent. Teak is indestructible. The brush jumped from my fingers because it wanted me to know how tough it is.

But the most amazing feature was the smell. Robert finished the brush in some marine varnish that makes me feel that i am aboard!

To finish it all he installed a two band knot that is a superb performer, but that is outside the scope of this lines.

Once again, zenshave.com is amazing. His owner Robert Carey is the kind of guy you want to make this kind of deal with. I recommend him 200%.

If you are in this hobby, at least once you should go custom, with something that has a lot of meaning for you. I dont have anything against shavemac, and simpson, and thater, etc.... the thing is that anybody can have one of those. And a custom brush is only yours.
