Kερκινη V3 by βeecosmetics (KEPKINH)

These days I am using KEPKINH Pure Vetiver, by βeecosmetics on Etsy.
I am a lover of Vetiver, and this Greek product is magnificent.
[Image: 9bCdWa2m.jpg][Image: OYy0J1ym.jpg]

The mechanical qualities are remarkable, thanks to the excellent very rich base.
Kερκινη V3 base produces a compact and shiny lather.
It really looks like fresh Greek yoghurt, and it's also quite fast.
Although it requires a little more water and processing time than simpler products.

Given the fragrance so rich and natural, I compared it to my favorite.
Le Pere Lucien Vetiver Bourbon (Special Edition Bomarzo64) is more refined, and less deep.
But the Greek does not disfigure in the least, given that it lacks those muddy notes that often accompany pure vetiver.
Also and especially in the comparison on the mechanics the KEPKINH stands out clearly.
LPL is faster, but the less full-bodied and covering foam is less comfortable to apply.
The classic advertising photo result is best achieved with Greek.
French is most (oddly) effective in lubrication.

Neither is a champion in skin conditioning.
Also in this, slight advantage of the Greek given the richness of the composition.
Already knowing the previous models I immediately used an aftershave lotion.
The accessory is not rich in functional, but it was more than enough to maintain the right comfort.
In addition to taking advantage of the pleasure of perfume.

In the end I would say a narrow balance, where the former wins in mechanics and the latter in fragrance.
However two excellent products.

As the KEPKINH easily supported the confrontation with the French prince, another fight tomorrow.
But he will deal with the King of France, who has one of the most luxurious versions on the market of Vetiver.
See you soon ...

CRSW Glide

I whipped up a face full of Cold River Soap Works (in the Brazen Moment flavor) today.  New for me, never tried any CSRW soaps before today’s shave.

I was very impressed.  The Brazen Moment offering that I tried was the CRSW “Glide” soap base.  Can’t speak to their other bases, but this stuff is bulletproof.  I’m not sure if the Brazen Moment scent will ever be a favorite, but I didn’t hate it.  Maybe a little too “hedge fund manager/Alpha Male” cologne scent for me.

I could easily compare the CRSW lather to my short-lived experience with Sē’bŭm soap.  At 1/4 of the price...it’s a steal.  The face lathering took an above average amount of brush dipping into the distilled water to get the Greek yogurt consistency.  No harm there, but once you get to the right proportion, this soap ROCKS.  The cushion is superb, the slickness is equally as good and the residual slickness is above average.

With only a 10 second load with a Zenith manchurian brush, I had more than enough lather for 3 passes.  I actually think I loaded too much soap in a few swipes with the brush.  This stuff is on the cream end of the “croap” scale, quite soft, so I’ll be more careful next shave.

Using a brass Karve with C plate and a new Polsilver, this could easily have been a 2 pass shave, with a little hunt and peck... (I’m now convinced that I only do 3 passes anymore, because I like it.)  I could have used my F plate, double the blade gap, with this soap and been un-irritated I’m sure.  Next time...

(Disclaimer:  No free soap for me, I paid for mine!  I have no sales and/or marketing contract with CRSW...Past performance is not indicative of future results. I’m Pete and I approve this soap.)

FS/FT: Dirty Bird Pottery 1.5 Scuttle

$

I just received my Dirty Bird Pottery 1.5 Scuttle in the blue rim on spice color after waiting a month for it to be made. It whips up a fast and warm lather (nothing needed beyond hot tap water for 15 minutes of really warm lather), but the bowl itself is angled a bit deeper than I prefer. The inner bowl dimensions are 4 1/2" x 2 1/8". I'd really like to trade this out for a scuttle that has a 6" x 2" inner bowl or dimensions pretty close to it. Preferably, the trade would be for one of the following because I'm familiar with their work and the sizes:

Steve Woodhead Ceramics Scuttle Mega 3
Doug Smith Pottery Scuttle Mug

If I can't trade it, I would also sell it for exactly what I paid for it and you can skip the month+ long wait at $88.25 shipped.

The safety razors of James J Fetzer

$

King Gillette did not invent his safety razor in a vacuum. Around the turn of the last century, there were a race to invent and patent the ideal safety razor. This should be inexpensive to produce, give a good shave, and preferably would be able to be sold in high numbers with good profit. Gillette wasn’t necessarily the best of the bunch, just the most successful in the long run.

One of the less successful inventors were James J Fetzer, of Columbiana Ohio. Mr Fetzer tok out two patents on behalf of the Herbrand Company.* Both used a replaceable blade with ears, but differed in how the blade and top cap was secured.

Both patents describe simple hoe style, single edge razors, reminiscent of the Diamond Edge razor I mentioned a while back. Both describe making the comb guard – or base plate, in the terminology of today – out of sheet metal with the edge curled. And both seems to have thin handles – but that seem to have been popular on many Christy style hoe razors as well.

His earliest patent – US 819,640 – describes a razor where the nut holding the handle is attached to the top cap, and the handle presses the guard and blade against the cap. One problem I see right away is that over-tightening the handle will bend the top cap upwards. I would have put some reinforcements around the back of the assembly to strengthen it.

His slightly later patent – US 840,449 – describes a razor with a separate top cap, base plate, and jam nut – all of which is both screwed onto the handle. While this avoids the possibility of stressing the top cap, it mean that the user will have to tighten the small jam nut. This will be harder than if you can twist the entire handle, especially if you have wet hands.

[Image: US819640-drawings-page-1.png][Image: US840449-drawings-page-1.png]

In the end I suspect Herbrand – and by extension, J J Fetzer – wasn’t forgotten because their razors were inherently less good than Gillette. Rather they were put aside and forgotten because production of replacement blades^ stopped. Which is a shame when you think about it, because there is a lot of fun history lurking in old razors.

The OCR on both patents – as I found them with the Google Patent Search – is pretty bad. Luckily for me – and you – razors.click has both of them on his website, nicely readable and with clickable drawings. Direct links; US819640 and US840449.

FOOTNOTES:
(*) According to Waits’ Compendium, the HERBRAND trademark was renewed in 1929 for razors… and then disappeared.

(^) Blades for Christy and Ender style hoe razors were also manufactured by third part blade makers. For instance Clark’s Blade & Razor Co (Newark, NJ) offered off-brand blades for a wide range of razors. They sold via the Sears Catalogue until at least the end of the 1920’s.

My former scuttle

It happened in an instant .

Yes, the tile floor in my den is very hard.

My Sara Bonnyman scuttle is no more. Fortunately, I have backups. Time to bring my Schwarzweisskeramic back into action.

I purchased the Bonnyman when I visited Sara's studio while on a vacation in 2018. The photos show it being made.

Johnny, didn’t you “redesign” your Sara Bonnyman scuttle a few years ago?

I would like to offer a PIF to CONUS LE members. Up for grabs is a new/unused AOS Sandalwood tallow. This is the discontinued stuff made by Valobra.

If you don't like sandalwood scents, I can offer a puck of Vintage William's. The good pre-2004 formula.

It appears that Rafael's UFO razor handle site is now defunct and gone. Does anyone here have downloaded information from his site showing dates of introduction and descriptions of his various handles? Please PM me if you have that information. I'd like to keep it for reference. I realize that there is some information here in his posts in the artisan section, but I would like a bit more original detail from his site.
Thanks.

Selling my once used Razorock Mamba 70.  It is in perfect condition.  It is a very nice razor but I have others in my collection, so this deserves a new home where it will get more use.  These are currently out of stock but retail at $70.  I am selling mine for $55 shipped in the USA.  It includes a black leather travel case.  Also, I would consider certain soaps from Grooming Dept, Talbot, Mammoth, newer versions of Eufros (Rosa Oud would be great) or soap/sets from Southern Witchcrafts (would love Alchemist) as partial trade.  Let me know what you have if that route interests you.   Here's some pictures:

Alpha Shaving Bulldog shaving brush

Here are my impressions of this Alpha Shaving Bulldog synthetic brush.

The G4 fibers are excellent. For sure synthetic brushes are getting better and better these days.

The handle is quite a thing in itself.

Not the cheapest synthetic brush but you’re getting a luxurious feeling both from the fibers and the quality of the handle.
