Hello all.
I'm Tim. Just found this website.
Been wet shaving for a round a little over a month, after 2 1/2 decades of disposable, cartridge, and a stint of electric shaving.
Wish I had gotten into this a long time ago.
A little about me: I'm a Marine. No longer AD, and sadly, I've now been out a touch over 18 years. Did a little over 11 on AD. Spent my time in based at Cherry Point working on AV8B Harriers and the II+, but did a six month deployment to Japan, and 2 Med floats, 1995 and 1998, along with many trips to 29 Palms, and Yuma. Wish I could have made a career out of it, but bad knees and other joint issues put the kabosh on that.
My other interests are 4 wheeling (real vehicles, not those little golf cart like things). Have had 2 Jeep TJs, and am now on my 3rd 4Runner.
Also into the shooting sports. Would like to try hunting at some point.
Used to be a cigarette smoker, and collected Zippos.
My wet shaving experience started with a Van Der Hagen TTO with VDH soap and blades, and a VDH boar brush.
I've picked up a few other DE razors since then, one being my dad's old 1976 Q4 date code Gillette Speed Shave TTO that I'm hoping can be restored, and a Maggard Razors MR5. My daughter bought me a Battle Brothers MKII Captains Kit for my upcoming 50th, so that is in the linen closet waiting for my birthday.
I've picked up a few other brushes. Second one was a Perfecto badge, to try badger. I've also picked up a WCS badger, and an Omega 2 band boar. The Battle Brothers kit came with a synthetic, but as with the razor (and the rest of the kit), it's put away until my birthday.
For soft goods, I've tried the Captains Choice Bay Rum soap, balm and splash, but discovered Wickham 1912 Magnum soap and balm, which I absolutely love. Hopefully WCS will get more.
Maybe one day I'll try a straight razor.
I'm still working on my technique, but I'm already getting a much better shave than cartridge, disposable ever did. The electric was better that the other 2, but I never really cared for it. All 3 gave a an 'adequate' shave (especially when I was in), but it was never a great shave.
I've really enjoyed learning how to do the prep, and while I've nicked myself a few times, it's never been really bad, and never required the toilet paper treatment. I did pick up some styptic 'pens' and have only needed to use it 3 times.
I have a few problem areas that I'm still trying to learn to address, but The sides and cheeks are getting really smooth with almost no irritation. My neck is where things get problematic. But time and practice will hopefully get those areas straightened out.
Long post for an intro, I know, but thanks for taking the time to read it!
