A little too disposable - yet another old patent

$
0
0
If I told you that there is a patent for a disposable razor that is not only hygienic and sanitary, comes with lather and styptic, and that furthermore
Quote:...is complete in itself and can be made readily available to the medical profession, in hospitals, offices, or on the highway miles from such places and hospitals.
It can be made readily attractive for use by women as well as men, dispensed in stores of all kinds, hotels, highway bus and air stations in connection with all modes of transportation, beauty parlors and other places of business.
what would you say? Wondering where you might get hold of some of them, right?
There is just one problem... despite the fact that Mr Edward H Lyon applied for a patent in 1949 and got it granted five years later, it seems it never really took off. In part, I suspect, since it was mostly constructed out of paper or  other inexpensive material - the only metal part was the blade - and by the description it would be hard to see it surviving more than a single shave. In essence, it was the forerunner to the modern day flimsy plastic disposable; just 40-50 years too early.

[Image: US2679093-0.png]
The razor was to be sanitized and packaged in a transparent, sterile bag with a supply of beard softening material, such as shaving cream, a blood coagulator such as a styptic pencil, and if desired an after-shaving preparation such as powder or the like inserted into the hollow handle to stiffen it during shipping.
Yes, the razor was expected to be so flimsy the handle needed support during shipping - how it were to stand up to actual shaving is anybody's guess.
As for the description of the drawing;
Fig. 1 is an exploded View of a razor consisting of a holder and a blade in accordance with the present invention;
Quote:Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same in a bag;
Fig. 3, an end elevation thereof;
Fig. 4, a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5, a top plan view;
Fig. 6, a perspective of a modied form of handle;
Fig. 7, the blank used in making the handle of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8, a perspective of the tape and securing means as shown in Fig. 6;
Fig. 9, a fragmentary vertical section through a head similar to that of Figs. l to 5 but designed for a single-edge razor blade; and
Fig. 10, a similar fragmentary section for another type of single-edge blade.
I like the fact that Mr Lyon planned for not just DE blades, but two kind of SE as well. I don't like the implied fragility of the handle though, and I have no idea how well a razor shaped from paper material would hold up to shaving.

XPEC Unscented

Just like most other guys, I've grown to expect some fragrance or other in a shaving soap. About a month ago I started a full tub of Unscented. I was thinking I'd probably add some fragrance (EdT, etc.) and I did the first time. It was OK, but I asked myself why I should worry about any scent. XPEC is completely without any scent whatsoever, as far as my nose knows. I think I'll just keep on going with it until it's all gone. I will state that I like unscented better than the scented version. That scent's not my cup of tea.

Plisson the Co. ?

Does anyone know much about Plisson?

I see no marketing presence other than the web page.  No one replies to the gmail account.   Has anyone visited a shop or talked to Plisson as a maker?

I suppose that I want to know more about where my cash is going.  Mostly, I want to know that I am paying for bonified handcrafted product and not outsourced to a shop in China.

Rare Simpson MF8, Butterscotch, Nimmer Mill, Somerset

This wonderful brush, fellow travellers, is on its way to me. I do not yet have the exact dimensions, but will provide them when I can. Looks a good-size knot. I have posted only one picture to give an indication.

It is a variation of the rare M8, and is stamped MF8, making it even rarer. I do not know for sure, but my speculation is that the F may denote 'Fan', if you take a closer look at the knot. Yes, it could all do with a clean-up, but I am glad I will get to do that myself, and carefully. I am assured that the knot is good and strong, too.

Some of you might have been following the sale on THAT website, but I wasn't the final bidder. By a strange stroke of luck (for me) the sale fell through, and I was able to negotiate a better deal. Enough said. Smile

Check out the rings on the lower handle. I have no idea of the date, but I am guessing mid 50s (?) Nimmer Mill, Somerset, almost certainly.

I will post images of the cleaned-up version, but post to Sydney can take up to 2 weeks. I bought it because I was feeling exuberant: after 10 months of unemployment, with no benefits, I may finally have landed a job. At almost 60, it's been dispiriting. I feel better now, though. Hope springs eternal.

Has anyone any information on the M series brushes to add to this post? I'd really like to gather any information available, anecdotal, archival, anything.

Alergic Reaction To......

I've noticed that I have a reaction to some soaps. It seems to be the Italian soaps with the almond fragrance. Even if that scent is not the primary fragrance, I still get a mild rash/burning sensation. Had with one other, high menthol soap. At first I blamed the blade, then realized over time it was the soap. Now I can and do still use some of these soaps, but only one day a week, example Razorock P160. I'm not sure if this a synthetic petro-chemical additive or almonds, I'm not allergic to the nuts in any edible form.

WTS 6*NOS Schick Injector L-type with the Hydro-Magic lever

Hello everyone!

Today I'm offering the following razors. You probably know these, I've given quite a few a year or so ago. These are the Schick "Lady Eversharp" Injector razors. This razor was produced from 1968 to 1972, so they had been stored carefully somewhere and waiting for an owner for about 50 years.

"Lady" is just a marketing approach, the only difference with the other L-type of that era is the handle which is a bit longer and yellow colored. I've tried too many SE razors through the last years, these have a great balance and shave me excellent. I have a thick beard and they're ideal for a quick, effortless and clean shave.

All packages are in great condition and each razor comes with 2 Schick Super Chromium blades, which are amazing performers and last quite a few shaves.

In addition, this specific model has the Hydro-Magic lever which allows you to clean thoroughly the razor at the end of your shave.

The price for each razor is $25, plus the shipping cost, which is $7. If you buy 2, shipping is the same. I will ship worldwide.

Any leather-workers in the house?

$

It is good and terrible at the same time to reach a point of stark self-discovery

I can work wood, and I can work metal ... I cannot work leather and have it come out like I want it to.

I have designed, and have a really poor prototype of a leather travel case that I want to make (or more accurately - have made for me)

[Image: CA7q9rD.jpg]

This is for a Timeless head, a home made Ti handle, and an old Gillette blade bank

As you can see, the slot I made for the threaded post is too deep, my hand-sewn saddle-stitch is terrible, my seams aren't flat or straight .... lets see, how else can I beat myself up ... Oh - my selection of leather is wrong too .... I want something stiffer, between what I have here which is soft and really supple and something thicker like holster or belt leather.

I used a couple neodymium magnets as a closure, but I can go with a stud closure too, but I don't think I want a tie-closure

If we have a anyone here to take on the challenge, we can discuss off line.  Thanks, Charlie

Does lapping film work well for sharpening SRs?

$

I am new to using a straight razor, and I have an older straight razor from William (Panther308) that probably won't need to be sharpened for awhile.  I do keep it stropped on a strop I got from Tony Miller.  But at some point I am going to need to sharpen it and would like to learn how to do this myself.  I thought a budget-friendly beginning would be to try the lapping film rather than jump right in and buy some expensive stones.  But does the lapping film work very well?

M&F 2xl in blue lapis with tortoise belts.  Brand new this brush is $260.  I acquired this brush from well know member Number Six.  He took some beautiful photos (two of them below) for SOTD posts.  If you Google 2xl you will see other photos he posted with this beauty.  It is an awesome example of a collaboration brush.  It does not shed.  The handle is beautiful and the hair is soft but scrubby.  I would like to get back what I paid, so I am asking $200, which includes PP fees and USPS Priority shipping in the US.
