Vintage Brushes - Can you ID?

I spent last summer in Spain and a relative of my wife - himself in his mid 80s - handed me the brushes below that belonged to his (!) father. So I have no idea how old these brushes truly are. Certainly 40+ years.

These seem to be:
Blue Handle Horse Hair brush (17/50mm)

The Acrylic Handle brushes (15/48mm) seem unused. It is not badger for sure. Looks like boar, which would make sense, but has a feel to it that is almost "synthetic".

They are non-branded or the branding is no longer visible, but probably from Spain (Vie Long?).

Let me know, if you recognize either brush.

I am looking £41 shipped to UK or £44 to Worldwide.

EDIT: Forgot to say I add freebie of 1 pack of Gillette 7 o'clock Yellow.

From Mühle To Mühle Modern To Vintage

Some time ago, I did a brush restore for Codfish (Jim). The handle has a corn colored top and a amber Lucite base.

Through some research we were able to find that the brush was the same make as this one.

So after I completed the restoration (custom 2 band badger 20 mm with 50 mm loft) here was the final view.

Since the Mühle emblem was used on the similar brush, Jim decided to contact the source to see if it was a Mühle or not. The next few lines are quoted from Jim on the brush.

Quote:I wrote to Christian Muller at Mühle to see if I could get more information about this brush. He was able to identify it as an early model of Mühle's pure badger (Rein Dachs) brushes.

He reported to me that the brush was made during the time that his grandfather, Otto Johannes Müller, ran the company (1945-1963). Mühle, it seems, has had an interesting history. It was nationalized by the Nazis duting World War II, and then again by the Soviets when it became part of the Communist-controlled Eastern Block.

The brush was made between 1950 and 1954, and was distributed primarily in Soviet countries.

Thank you to Christian for giving me some background on this marvelous brush, and to Gary Carrington for his superb restoration of what is now one of my all-time favorite brushes!

Now if you think that is the end of the story, think again. I had one more of these handles that I planned to become my own personal brush. I simply waited on restoring it until I decided on a course of action. I decided that since this was a Mühle brush, a Mühle knot would be in order. I had in my possession the Version 1 STF brush I purchased from Bullgoose in April 2012 to support the first round of Mantic's Synthetic Team testing that took place in the May-June 2012 time frame. In addition each member of team received an Version 1 STF in May 2012 directly from Mühle. Since I had two STF Version 1 brushes, I decided that my smaller 23 mm white handle STF would be sacrificed to supply the knot I wanted for this brush. So the surgery began and the knot was removed by cutting away the handle. The knot was embedded so deep and strong that steam would have been useless so the white handle was scrapped for the vintage handle which was expanded to accept the donor knot.

Here is the process before and after shot.

The loft on the update was made considerably shorter which after the first test showed a dramatic improvement in performance over the original setting. The age of the handle shows the life that it has led. I polished it up until it was smooth but still retained the color changes that only truly come through the years of time.

This setting on the Version 1 fibers makes for a great face lathering brush that still works well bowl lathering. It has great backbone and just a slight amount of scritch. The closest performer would be like a really good two band badger in terms of backbone, softness and slight scritch. Now it is a high performing an interesting looking all Mühle brush.

Good day everyone! I'm looking to sell these fine brushes (no shedding issues) because I'm looking at getting a chubby 2 in 2-band Biggrin

Prices include USA shipping, I'm willing to sell anywhere just PM me. Paypal only please, thanks for looking.

1) Vie-Long JL Petree 2-band: knot 23/50. Bought this used, but it's in great shape. Brush is really nice and dense, just a little scritchy for my tastes. Sorry, I don't have the original box. $60
2) WSP 2-band "green lanter": knot 24/50. I bought this new and used it lightly (~15 times). It's a terrific brush with great backbone, yet nice soft tips. $50 SOLD

Favorite Artisan Body Soap

I've been interested in trying out bar soaps again after using a body wash for many years. I'm looking for some help in identifying some of the better artisan soap makers for body soaps. They don't have to make shave soap either, I just know mostly shave soap makers. If you have another suggestion feel free to vote other and write in suggestion in a reply. The top qualities I am looking for in a body soap are skin care/moisturizing, lathering ability, rinses clean and scents. Which are your favorites with these categories in mind. I am not including some of the major soap makers such as MWF or Musgo Real in this list. Thanks for your help!

Is there a list of unscented soaps and creams?

If not, maybe one could be assembled.

I am trying to insert a picture from my library (pictures). How do I go about it. They ask for some sort of remote UDL.
What the $ell are they talking about? With Badger and Blade its very simple, go into my pictures and select the one I want and add it to a new thread I was going to post.

Is there a chance that Razorock XXX ever makes a return to the market? I'd also like to get ideas on other soaps/crops that resemble it. I heard it was the cream of the crop so to speak.

Simpson Question

I have a question that probably one or some of our resident Simpsons experts might be able to answer. I was just curious about how people's taste or demands have changed, if they have, over the years. Does anyone know what the most popular Simpson's brushes were say, 50 years ago? 75? a 100? Did our fathers prefer smaller brushes? bigger? our grandfathers? Were Dukes the brushes of choice by the guys who fought Hitler? Useless meandering by a underpowered imagination I know. But I am curious.

New Shaving Brushes

Hi guys, thanks to the administrators I've been added to the list of Artisans here on "The Shave Nook" and I'm honored to be included!
I eventually got around to making some new shaving brushes and DE razor handles…..when I took an allergic reaction to something and ended up looking like I'd come second in a boxing match!!
It turned out to be Cocobolo dust……so until I get better dust extraction/protection in the shop, these will be the last Cocobolo for a while!
All the brushes pictured have 22mm High Mountain Badger knots and as they're the same as I've got fitted to my Olivewood one, are what I've discovered to be gel tips!
The top brush has an African Blackwood handle and the next three are Cocobolo.
They're all available on my website and if you've any questions please don't hesitate to contact me via PM.
Cheers,
Gordon

W&B FIS with frost line!

$

I've restored many of these Fine India Steel W&Bs but since I never seem to get the pristine blades I never noticed any evidence of a frost line on them.
My client commissioned me to restore this one and add the frost line back in. It's basically an etch.
I cleaned up the blade ( see,, I don't get pretty ones to just hit with some polish and call it done) polished it, added the frost line and built some Black Horn scales with double stacks at the ivory wedge end and a single at the hinge.
I kept the frost line parallel with the top of the spine, started it at the bottom edge of the shaft and terminated it at the bottom of the barbers notch.
I also built the scales to match the sweep of the top edge of the spine and got the blade to sit "just right" so it paralleled the scales and the script "Diamond Edge Razor" just peeks out of the scales.
Interesting piece which leads me to other possibilities.

Hi all, I'm glad to be in this great forum.

Since I started I did shave brush. A year ago I started shaving with a razor my grandfather gave me 19 years ago and will continue to do while my pulse permits.

For some time I also dedicate myself to make shaving brushes. I hope I can help in any way I can.

I've been doing Movember this year, and with the help of Movember's official app I was able to make a little stop motion movie of my stache's journey. It's been fun, but I'm looking forward to going back to a babyface on Dec 1st. The 'you look like a pedophile' comments are getting a little old Wink

Muehle's Facebook page has a darkened photo of a new Muehle razor that is labeled "coming soon." It is certainly an interesting development, and we can now begin speculating as to when it will be introduced and more importantly, the specifics of the razor itself...slant, TTO, stainless, other?
