Rocnel SE-G GEM razor .. WOW.

$

I received my Rocnel SE-G GEM razor today.  I normally wait for at least three shaves before reviewing, however in this case I felt compelled to post after only one shave.  Color me impressed!
Packaging : superb.
Finishing : beautifully built and finishing is impressive.
Feel : the razor has a nice heft and is solidly constructed.
Blade loading : easy enough.  I watched the video and followed instructions.
Shave : outstanding.  2-pass BBS seriously.  I have over 20 vintage GEM/Everready razors and have enjoyed them all.  This Rocnel combines the heft and solidity of the Streamline with the efficacy of razors like the 1924 or 1914.
Great job, Rocnel.  I look forward to seeing different versions of this fabulous razor!

How hordes grown

When our grandfathers shaved, they used the razor, blades, soap, and brush they could get in their local area. Perhaps they had a choice, perhaps there was just one to pick from. They would use it until they ran out of blades or scraped the last of the soap out of the bowl, and then go back to the same store and buy the same thing again. Efficient, but hardly exciting - even if the products probably were undeniable better than the canned foam and multi blade cartridge razors most stores stock today.

These days many of us live in a place where traditional shaving supplies are near impossible to get in local stores - the products have been squeezed out by the Big Name Multinationals multi blade cartridge system and pressurised dry foam in cans. The downside of that is not only that many of our friends and fellow men don't know the joy of a good shave, but also that we must turn to the Internet to buy what we need for our daily ritual. And the upside of that is that we're no longer restricted to the brands - or even brand, singular - that our local stores carry... the shaving products of the whole wide world is now ours to buy. The selection is staggering, and finding the right one is a daunting task for a newly converted wetshaver - from what I have seen in online discussion forums, it can be a daunting task even for those old hands who never succumbed to the lure of the multi-blade razors in the first place.

We're lucky enough to live in a time when the whole world is easily - almost too easily - accessible from the comfort of our homes: anyone with an internet connection can within minutes find other people across the world who are passionate about the same things - in our case that thing is traditional wetshaving. We can to our hearts content discuss the finer points of making lather, or nitty-gritty details on how one brush compares to another. And - and this is where the danger of hoarding starts raising it's head - you can easily be moved by glowing reviews of shaving products you never heard of before... be it brands from a different continent or something someone has lovingly crafted by hand on their kitchen counter.

Something else happened at (very) roughly the same time as the multi blade razors were pushed onto the marked: there was the growing realization (or perhaps the re-realization) that men - us big, burly, manly men - should be allowed, or even encouraged to be a little vain. Care about our looks a little further than checking for holes in our pants and scraping the stubble off with a bayonet... it is not without reason that the ads for the early multi blade razors emphasised the smoothness of the shave and how much the girls would like it. Suddenly boys growing into men were told that it was okay to use that nice smelling soap, rub some lotion into the cheeks and, y'know - smarten up a bit. Gets you a bit more positive attention from the girls too - or the boys, if you're tastes run that way. Your Mileage May vary, as it does with so many things in shaving and life.

As mentioned, we live in an age of global commerce. Checking out that barbershop in Turkey is just as easy as checking that one in downtown Houston - even if you happen to live in Norway. And the almost scary part is that it's all easy to place and order and have it shipped straight to your door. No more slugging barefoot through snowdrifts higher than your own head to buy a sorry piece of soap at the drugstore (uphill both ways off course, not that the youth of today would believe it), no more having to make do with the same old blade. Instead we can order new soap and new blades from anywhere we like, and while we're at it we might well put that cream the guys at the forum were raving about in the basket... oh, and lets pick up a yet another sampler pack of blades as well...and that brush that I didn't pick up last time...

The result? The box the poor postman has to drag through the snowdrifts (barefoot, uphill, etc) seems pretty huge when you finally receives it, and the contents can barely be fitted into your shave nook. And where did that new razor come from? The mysteries of online shopping is never more impenetrable than when you're unpacking.

Exposed to fellow shavers and tempting shops online, it's easy for a hoard to grow out of all reasonable proportions. Our forefathers are a testament to the fact that we don't really need four razors, five brushes and seven different soaps and creams in order to shave - but it is nice to to be able to mix and match, try something new, select just the right fragrance before we go out and face the world. We can embrace our manliness by picking something that smells of the great outdoors, or get ready to woo the girl (or boy) in our life with a light rose scent... the only limits is the sky and the size of your cupboard. And that is why I have gotten to rather enjoy my Acquisition Disorders; while it does cost me a bit of money (but not much more than buying into the latest fad from the Big Name Multinationals would cost) it gives me much pleasure - not just in the morning spa-experience that a good shave is, but also throughout the day - every day.

Embrace your hoard. Reconquer the bathroom and fill it with products that both you and your partner in life will enjoy. Celebrate your ability to be a manly man with clear skin and a pleasant fragrance. Revel in your Acquisition Disorders - but don't spend more than you can afford. And Pay It Forward or sell to a fellow wetshaver when you happens to find something in your stash that you can't understand why you got in the first place - after all, that makes room for more new supplies!

(I originally posted this here and on my blog back in April 2012, but I figured most new members never made it that far back in the archives... and I found myself nodding in agreement as I read it again today, so here it is Wink )

Suggestions wanted for some classic men's colognes

Hello,
I'm wanting some ideas and suggestions on some classic men's colognes. To me "classic" is anything before about 1960. Also qualifying would be a modern cologne that imitates or is at least reminiscent of a pre-1960 cologne.
Thank you

WTS Vintage razors

Hi guys, I wanted to share the fun and try to move some of my vintage razors. As you can see, these are a bit different than your usual vintage Gillettes and should provide a fun exploration in this hobby of ours.

Most of these were exchanged and/or impulse buys. Prices are with shipping included (which is usually the bigger part of the final price). Will ship worldwide.
If you're interested in something and would like to discuss trades, multiple purchase discount or shipping options, PM me and we'll work something out.

Descripton of every razor as well as pictures are provided below:

Gillette Slim Twist - The Knack  (Made in England code V 2) with case - 20$
Condition: cracked handle and while mechanically correct, one door is a bit "lazy". Perfectly usable. The case is almost perfect.

 Wizamet W4 with case - 15$
This is a Gillette Slim Twist clone made by Polish company Wizamet (yes, that Wizamet).
Condition: cracked handle, chipped case edge, cracked but glued case door. Mechanically correct.

Gillette Slim Twist made by Rotbart - 15$ each
To my knowledge, these were made by Rotbart under Gillette licence or after Gillette acquired Rotbart. I have two of these and are in almost perfect condition.
Condition: very good

Vintage Astra razor with case - 20$
These are Gillette Slim Twist clones made by Astra (yes, that Astra). The handle is a bit different than original Gillette Slim Twist and imo prettier.
Condition: very good

Vintage Astra razor (without case) - 15$
Condition: same as above.

Wizamet Junior with case - 15$
This is a Wizamet aluminium razor, a bit roughed up. The case is decent and I'm seeing it beeing a selling point Wink.
Condition: average. The razor contour is without damage although there might be slight dent on one of the safety bars (not 100% sure). Surface as seen in picture, i.e. not very good. I'm sure it could be polished though.
The case is in good condition.

1981Eagle's Rocnel SE-G Shave report

$

0
The shipping was fast - I ordered and received this beauty.  Like a kid at Christmas, I went to bed anticipating the morning.

I preped simply by washing my face - I don't do anything elaborate.  I wear a van dyke, so I am not shaving my chin or under my nose.

Software - Hardware:  The Rocnel SR-G loaded with a Personna GEM stainless.  Wolf Whiskers brush with a TGN Finest badger.  Proraso sandalwood cream (face lather)

Impression .... there is something very different in this razor from the GEM 1912's and Clog Pruf that I have owned - it's hard to describe.  I used to say that progressing from a cart, to a DE to a SE was like going backward in time.  The SE had a feel closer to a straight razor than a DE, and a DE closer than a straight.  For me, in vintage GEM's they have a 'sound' to them when you shave that sounds like a 'hair popping' and 'scrape' (but it doesnt' fell like a scraping or irritating shave) .... after all that 'set-up' ... that sound is completely gone with the Rocnel.  Could be that the weight of the razor and that it's stainless and not stamped brass causes the difference - could be that the way the blade is loaded and secured makes the difference.

First pass is always north to south.  That isn't quite with the grain, as my hair grows more of an angle than that, but it isn't perpendicular (across the grain) either.  It's sort of a cross between WTG and XTG.    I had a bad angle on my right cheek and nicked myself near the mustache edge.  I slowed down and finished the first pass without incident.
Re-lather
Second pass is a against the grain (ATG) pass.  I typically go slower on this pass anyway and I did this time too.  For me - below the jaw line, I want to use nearly no pressure - I petend I am trying to use the blade to remove the shaving cream, but not touch the skin - Impossible - I know ... but it makes me use as little pressure as possible.

Impression - Results:  The I believe the aggressiveness of the razor is on par with an ATT R - slightly more blade feel than a Wolfman WR1, much less than my ATT H.  Mid-aggressive is the right place to spot it.  Other than the nick - which was my fault and cleaned up quickly with a styptic pencil - I got a great shave.  I wouldn't say BBS (I have very high standards for that label) but darn close.  Above the jaw-line it is as nice a shave (or better) than I get from anything.  Below the jaw-line I have some weird hair patterns and it's hard to get a perfect shave - but I believe today's shave was better overall than yesterday's with the WR1.

I don't know if others will - but after the shave I removed and dried the blade and cleaned the razor.  I'll use it the next few shaves and see how it does after the honeymoon phase has ended .... but I believe it to be a part of the rotation for sure.

So apparently I ordered 2 Chiseled face Civet soaps by accident. Paid $43 with shipping. Will sell for $40 shipped or trade for a new or gently used soap/soaps. Don't have much specific in mind. Maybe one of the new T+S scents? Will entertain pretty much any offer.

So, I have some blades, which, I suspect, may be counterfeits.

The Gillette Silver Blues, 7 O'Clocks, etc should have an extra piece, of packaging, branded with the name of the razor blade, between the wax, and, tuck, right?

Picked up today in a charity shop for $1. Cool.

I think it must be pre-1980 going by the pre-decimal '3ozs'. I have seen an image of a similar puck with identical sticker but in blue, on what was called the "Naval Set".

Anyway, thought I'd share my nice little bit of good fortune. If anyone has ever used one of these or has any idea of the date, please let me know.

Enjoy.
