Howdy from NY

Hello, I'm Will, from NY.

I wanted to say hello to you all.

I joined another forum many years ago but never bought a DE because of all the many choices then this year finally bit the bullet and purchased a brush and razor and some soaps/creams. I'm finally at the point of nicks being infrequent which I am very proud of.

Anyway, my wife and I share our small Manhattan apartment with our crazy coonhound and my growing selection of soaps Smile Good to meet you all!

Oh no, what did I do??????

A few days ago I started getting this rash on my neck and cheeks.  I had to stop shaving due to the irritation.  I haven't started using anything new, same old soaps and aftershaves I've been using. At first I thought it was razor burn, because it kind of looked like that.  When I did have razor burn, a little shea butter overnight and it was gone the next day.  Not this stuff.  Shea butter just makes it even brighter red!

I have a dermatologist appointment on Monday morning.  Hopefully they can tell me what it is?  Not shaving is KILLING ME!

I'm doing a tourist trip, and my choice for this trip was Ikon razor #101 with OSS handle, Grooming CO. synthetic brush, with Polsiver super iridiun blade, L'Occitane CADE crean and Balm after shave .The choice IMO was the right one. I wonder what would normally use for your trip.

Extra Hollow Ground Razors

I have been straight razor shaving now for a little less than a year and have tried various blade grinds from hollow to 1/4, to wedge and prefer the hollow grinds.  I would now like to try an extra hollow, or singing blade.  I would appreciate recommendations on makes/models I should look for.  Also, among currently made razors, I have been looking at the Boker Silver Steel 6/8 Extra hollow ground.  Has anyone used this razor, and how do you like it?
Thanks,
Tom

SOLD PLEASE ARCHIVE Vintage Simpsons S8 Super

PENDING For sale is a gorgeous vintage Simpsons S8 with original Super badger knot. The brush has hardly been used over its lifetime, as its condition shows. The Super badger in this knot is some special hair, with very soft, white tips (the color in my photos is a little off). In appearance, it reminds me of some of the vintage Plisson HMW knots that are so highly regarded. I have used this brush two or three times and have encountered no shedding. The knot measures 22x50mm, and the handle height is 53mm. This is vintage butterscotch at its finest. I would like $85, shipping in the U.S. included. Paypal for payment.

Good evening all. Got a new bottle of Fine L'Orange Noir up for trade. Only opened to smell and was not for me. Would like to keep trades rather even cost wise so I'm sure we can work out something one way or other. I can be picky scent wise so apologies if I turn something down. No rose scented soaps please!

Trades I'm interested in are new or gently used..

Shannons Soaps other than silk pajamas.  (New)
Mystic Waters soaps other than Poggio dei pini
B&M Cheshire
Mickey Lee The Kracken
Pitralon Pure or Polar

Will start with these. If no takers I may just sell or come up with other stuff.
Thanks all for looking!

Hello from New Mexico

I just want to say hello to everyone from down New Mexico. I just started wet shaving a few weeks back and I must say I'll never go back to cartridge shaving again. First shave was just about perfect! Watched a few videos on YouTube like Nick Shaves and Busta and decided to give it a go. I think this is already turning into addictive hobby..lol.. Purchased a new Merkur 34c,  Maggard MR1, MR5, MR22 and RazoRock Bamboozled SLAB. A few Omega brushes, soaps and aftershaves. When I got my Merkur 34c it brought back all kinds of memories of my grandfather. I remember my grandfather talking with me while he would shave using and old safety razor rinsing his face in an old water basin. I remember how cleanly shaven he would be and all the great aftershave scents he would put on. I never thought there would be a forum about wet shaving?.. I'm glad There is. I was just searching information on Wolfman Razors and found this forum.

Bernd's site says that we should order the knot diameter .5 to 1 mm less than the actual opening.  Is he just being overly conservative?

My Merkur Futur handle is 22mm and I want to put a 22mm knot in it (and 22mm knot are the specs).

can synthetics handle HOT water?

I do not wet my badgers with HOT water ..... as manufacturers warn that it could damage the badger hair if too hot.  Do synths have the same concern?  Or can I use really HOT water?

Thanks....

Thiers issard straight and brushes F/S

Good morning Nookers!  I have some items that need new homes.  Please add $5 flat shipping for US, $10 for Canada and $15 worldwide.  I am not interested in trades at this time.  If you would like more pictures or have any questions please PM me.

First up is a Thiers Issard 5/8 Full Hollow Ground straight razor made for Art of Shaving.  I purchased this from a fellow Nooker to be my first step into straight shaving, but I just haven't gotten into it at all.  I have stropped it a few times to practice and shaved the hairs off my arm but it hasn't touched lather nor water since in my possession.  It is in excellent condition with the only flaws being some light scuffs on the brushed stainless scales.  From the reviews I have found online these razors are very good quality and hopefully an excellent value at $90.

From L to R:
Chubby 1 Best (24x45mm)- Original owner, very lightly used, no defects.  The best of the Best badger is used in this brush.  Very dense, firm backbone and soft tips. $80

Chubby 2 Super (29x48mm)- Original owner, very lightly used, no defects.  The softest Super hair I have ever experienced is very tightly packed in this knot, it is like lathering with an oversized silk q-tip.  Top of the line luxury!  $190 SOLD FOR $180

Milk Churn "Somerset Rod Stock" (23x47mm)- Original owner, very lightly used, no defects.  Soft tips, no scritch, moderate to high backbone.  This is a great brush, I just have way too many, it has a slight yellowish hue apparently from older rod stock.  $65 SOLD SOLD SOLD

Shavemac Beehive Finest (25x50mm)- Original owner, very lightly used, no defects.  A step above your average Simpson Best, Shavemac Finest offers a very good mixture of backbone and soft tips.  This brush was just purchased earlier this year and I'm not as big of a fan of the zebra stripes as I thought I would be and I will be reordering another with a slightly lower loft.  Would work excellent for bowl or face lathering.  $65

From L to R:

Custom Buffalo Horn w/ TGN Finest F2 (27x52)- Original owner, used twice, no defects.  This handle is absolutely remarkable and worth the price of admission by itself.  It is combined with a nice TGN Finest F2 knot which has soft tips with just a hint of scritch which will probably fade with a few more uses.  Made by an artisan that went by Proswell on eBay. $40 SOLD SOLD SOLD!

Dr Dittmar 2-band Silvertip (25x56mm) - Original owner, very lightly used, no defects.  These sell at Royal Shave for $140 and offer a very nice shaving experience.  Made in Germany, this brush has a nice ergonomic handle paired with a very nice knot with soft tips and moderate backbone.  I would say this is a step below the Thater 2-band of yesteryear (with gelt tips) but a step up from the current offerings.  $50

Gillette Extra Large restored with Frank Shaving Finest (26x53mm)- I restored this brush personally a few months back.  The hollow handle has been filled with hot glue, which I also used to set the knot.  The knot is densely filled (no shedding) and has firm backbone combined with soft tips.  I have only used this brush a few times since completing the restoration.  $40

L to R:

Somerset Duke 3 (25x48mm)- I purchased this brush from another member and it is everything you would expect it to be.  Dense, moderately firm and soft tips on this beautifully shaped knot that is installed in a real handmade handle.  I actually have two other Somerset Dukes and it was silly of me to buy a third.  There are no defects (shedding, cracks, etc.) but a previous owner has preserved the lamp black with clear nail polish (you have to look very closely to tell).  Paid $155, yours for $125.

Butterscotch Emperor Pure Badger (20x48mm)- I purchased this brush hoping it would have very soft tips, but it does have a moderate amount of scritch.  It would make an excellent brush as is or you could restore it with your favorite knot.  It does have several minor scratches and dings around the handle consistent with what would happen if you mug lathered daily with it for several years, otherwise in excellent condition. $30

Hello Everyone -

For sale today are two brushes, a Thater 4125/2 two-band finest silvertip and a Rooney 3/2 three-band silvertip. Both brushes were purchased from members on TSN and both brushes are in great shape with no shedding issues. I’m selling the Thater because I recently acquired its larger brother the 4125/3 (awesome brush). The Rooney isn’t big enough for my tastes.

SOLD Pending Funds - The Thater retails for $165 – my price to you is $120.00

SOLD Pending Funds - The Rooney retails for $110 – my price to you is $75.00

Plus choose one freebie pictured below. All the soaps have been used once or twice. The Nivea is brand new.

Prices include shipping with tracking number. PayPal and CONUS only. No trades please, as I’m paying off a few new brushes.

I’m having a “Man Day” today so I’m shaving, watching the NFL draft, smoking a pork shoulder and having a few cocktails. Anyway, I will do my best to respond to any PMs as quickly as possible but I might be a little slow.

Thanks for looking!
Greg
