This is a razor that have created a lot of expectation and I can understand why.

Long time ago Phil talked to me about his two razor projects : the SE and the "resurrection" of the Darwin razor , and both have seen the light , which are good news for all of us.

I must admit that I wasn't particularly thrilled with the Darwin razor project : while it has an "art deco" style , I found it to be very ugly.Yes , you have read right.Ugly.

However I did read reviews of people who I trust , regarding how well it shaved and how smooth and efficient it was.

My curiosity level was then turned on.

When Phil offered some of these razors on the FB Asylum group , I couldn't stop myself and got one.Yes , I did it...

And first let me tell you something : this razor look much , but really much better in life than in any picture , or at least any picture that I have taken.

It could be that is not shiny , something I have liked a lot.Its design also looks much better in real life than pics.

It's a very well balance razor , feels sturdy on the hand , with most of its weight on the closed comb head.

I didn't find any blemish or marks on mine , and I will praise is matte finish.

However , of you have very big hands , I don't think this razor could be for you.Its kind of a small one , like a Merkur 33C

The handle , due to its design , is a pleasure to hold.Yes , is smooth , no knurling on it , but comfortable to hold and no risk of slipping off your fingers.

The closed comb head is a two piece one , very easy to load a blade on it , and the alignment is simply perfect.Don't have to do a trick to align it as it should.

And I'm sure many of you are wondering how does it shaves ?

Well , I have tried this razor with a Gillette Silver Blade , Astra Green and Astra Blue.

If you shave everyday , this is a razor for you.Not extremely aggressive , not mild.I told some people that if Rockwell would have a 3.5 closed comb head would shave like this : smooth , very smooth but also efficient.

I only do two Razor passes these days : North to South and across the grain and I get a perfect shave every time.I don't have to be extremely careful to cut myself.Don't get me wrong , you could if you apply to much pressure , but it's so smooth that the razor , with the proper angle , which is very easy to find , would do the work for you.

So I can totally recommend this razor for the everyday shaver , as well as for the ones that shaves every other day.It would reward you with close shaves while respecting your skin.

And let me tell you again : it looks much better in real life than in any pic I have taken.Im afraid I haven't done justice to how it really looks like.

Another great Made in USA stainless steel razor joining the ranks. We are lucky.

Thater two-band

Gentlemen,

Thater brushes are generally known for having medium density and backbone, with silky soft tips. And they don't shed, not in my experience, anyway. Which is the case with this little gem: Thater 4292/4 finest silvertip in two-band. The 23mm knot is set to a 55mm loft, and it is a pleasure to use. The loft is just a little too high for me, as I prefer knots of around 50mm. I think I've used it fewer than five times. The brush is priced around $150. Your price is $115 shipped U.S. Paypal is fine. No trades, please.

Received these two soaps--one as part of a sale and the other as part of a trade. Unfortunately, I'm up to my eyeballs in software so looking to find them a new home.  The Dr Jon's Aphrodite is half full while the Col Ichabod Conk is a full tub.  Not looking to split them up so if you want both please let me know.  Soaps are currently packed in a USPS small priority mail box so I'm only looking to ship domestically.

The Col Conk has a very pleasant scent although there is no label on the tub which allows me to be more specific while the Dr Jon's tin lists Black Courant, Rose, Apple and Pomegranate.

Price for shipping USPS Priority Mail is $6.75 (domestic only).

Thanks for looking.

Mystic Water Yellow Rose

Hi everybody - I'm starting to think about the spring and decided to finally make a rose-scented soap.  It's a yellow rose fragrance, which is not a musky or powdery rose.  Yellow (and peach colored) roses are supposed to be closer in scent to the fruits that are related botanically to roses, like apples.  I think this is a very nice rose scent, clean and delicate.  It's the lanolin recipe, and is the new chelated version.

I also spent a little time this weekend streamlining the website.  I invite you to make suggestions if there's something you think will make it easier to navigate, or if you spot any broken links.  Thanks!

~ Michelle

SOLD Please archive: Envy Custom with Blackwolf Synthetic II Knot

Had Nathan @ Envy Shaves make this brush for me in November 2016...RED YELLOW FELLOW with 25mm Blackwolf Synthetic II Knot...handle height is 2.5" / brush weighs 2.8" oz. This is one of the best performers in my rotation and I can't say enough about the Blackwolf Synthetic knot----I have this knot in 4 other brushes and absolutely love it.  Use it to face and bowl lather (although I face lather 95% of time) and the knot feels amazing on your face. Knot offers the perfect amount of backbone to whip up a lather using soaps and creams regardless if they're hard or soft.

Purchase price was $90

Sale price is $70 which includes FREE USPS PRIORITY MAIL SHIPPING (domestic only)---comes with Envy Shave tube

Please consider my 100% positive feedback on TSN with more than 100 positive transactions.

Thanks for considering my listing and purchase with confidence.  You will not be disappointed.

Have been away for a while so I thought it best to re-introduce myself again. Veteran of most things wet shaving but never afraid to learn. Lots of gear, one-time razor collector (and still owner of many gems). Will certainly die with more than I can use.

Lots of changes I see, many new faces - but great topics, gear and lots of things I may need to "investigate" more deeply. To all my old and new friends alike, I say "Hello!!".

What is the meaning of pulling and tugging?

$

Hello Gents;

I have come across this a lot:

When do you hone a straight?  When it start to pull and tug!
When do you change your blade?  When it start to pull and tug!!

English is my second language.  I understand clearly the meaning of pull and tug in general terms.  I just don't grasp its shave meaning very clearly.  It seems to get lost in translation for me. Can anybody elaborate?  Or describe how it feels?

Thanx tons,

Pepe Peña

Elite's 24 knots are just outstanding

I have nothing but high praise for Bob's (Elite) Manchurian 24 2 band knot which at the opening comes out at 26-27. This over-stuff knot has extremely soft tips, good backbone that gives a full badger lathering. If you like a brush/knot that is scrubby (a face massage) this knot is not for you (my opinion). If you like a brush that is soft with strong character Bob's knot's are at the top of my list. (I can't tell you about the characteristics of the 26 or 28 Manchurian 2 band knot or bulb head).

Below are five of my brushes that have Bob's fan knots with varying lofts from 50 to 54. (as you can see I like variations of the 7 handle)

Aspis Ice Rain shaving cream - Bulgaria does it again!

Here's another Bulgarian beauty - wowwww, is it awesome!

Ease of lathering: 10/10--Explodes into some of the richest lather I've seen!

Longevity of lather: 10/10--Like all Bulgarian creams the lather is 100% stable.

General skincare: 9/10--Soothing, moisturizing, and a slight cooling sensation.

Scent: 8/10--Pretty good. I cannot describe it, though.

Price: N/A--It was sent to me in trade a few years ago. I heard it's very cheap in Bulgaria.

Would I buy again: 10/10--Most definitely. It's a fantastic cream.

Aspis Ice Rain and Aspis Cool Stream are produced by Fresh Up Cosmetics in Varna, Bulgaria. If you have sensitive skin like I do then this Ice Rain cream will be a big help because it contains allantoin which soothes and relieves irritation or dryness. It's not a heavily-mentholated cream like someone else told me, but there's still some menthol in it and it's enough to be felt. It's unfortunate that this stuff is unavailable here in North America!

Multiple-edge safety-razor - old and bizarre patent

$
0
0
The human mind can be an overboiling pot of fantastical ideas, letting us come up with all sorts of brilliant and bizarre inventions. King Gillette's double edged blade was arguable one of the former. Malcolm H Baker and Franklin S Frisbie's hexagonal blade probably belongs in the later category...

The idea behind the invention was admirable;
Quote:It is the object of the present invention to roduce a razor of the safety type in which the blades by the use of a plurality of cutting edges shall have increased life-in other words, a' razor in which the blades require resharpening or replacing at longer intervals than in devices at present in use.

Blades for the Gillette razors were not - comparatively speaking - nearly as cheap as they are today, and older style safety razors used wedge blades that required tools and skill to hone and sharpen. However... the leap of logic seems to have been that if two edges are good, then more edges must be better. Minor issues like practicality and useability seems to have taken a back seat to having many edges on the blade.

The result is less of a safety razor of the hoe-type and more of a shavette:
Quote:A further object is to provide a razor in which the cutting edge in use is in a parallel lane with the handle, and thus to provide or a drawing stroke in shaving, of the same the as is employed in the ordinary old style folding-blade razor.

And finally, they claimed that their new, improved razor also were:
Quote:...of few and simple parts, which may be easily taken apart or assembled and which is readily cleansed after use.

Bone broth

$

0
While out shopping my Better Half and I spotted packs of cattle bones - leftovers from making deboned steaks, and just the thing for making broth or soup. So naturally we got some, and I have spent most of the day nursing the stockpot.
  • 2.5 kg bones (about five pounds)
  • 4 big carrots
  • 1 onion
  • small handful of peppercorns and a dozen or so bay leaves
  • 4 litres of water (a bit more than a gallon if you live in the US, a bit less than a gallon if you're British)
Set the oven to 180ºC (about 350ºF) and let the bones bake for half an hour. In the mean time, cut the carrots and onion into thumb sized chunks and put in the pot along with the water, peppercorn and bay leaves. Bring to a boil, add the bones, and let simmer until reduced to about half the volume.

And yes, the layer of fat on the top of the finished broth is pretty hefty.. about 2cm (4/5ths inch) or so Biggrin Broth will be turned into stew this weekend, but could also be frozen for later or used as a healthy nutrient packed meal/drink.
