Impressions of ATT Atlas R2 Open Comb

Before I bought this, I emailed Bullgoose and asked how this razor stacked up against my current favorite, a vintage Gillette New LC. My concern was that I didn't want too aggressive a razor (like an R41), or too mild, and spend $185 finding that out. Phil's answer was that the R2 base plate would probably be a taste more aggressive than the New LC.

I just received my razor yesterday, slapped in my favorite blade (Personna Lab), whipped up some RazoRock SOZ, and took this baby for a spin. Phil was exactly right in his analysis, and I couldn't be happier. The Atlas R2 provided an excellent, comfortable, near BBS shave in 2 passes. I only do 2 passes because I have somewhat sensitive skin, and I'll take a DFS with comfort any day of the week. The razor is somewhat heavy, but not too heavy. The spiral grooves on the 3" handle provided excellent grip, and the razor is extremely well balanced. It was very intuitive as far as angle placement, and seemed to "ride the rail" of each stroke. It effortlessly clung to my face at the perfect angle, especially the "tricky" area under my lower lip. Audible feedback is quite good as well.

This is one fantastic razor, indeed. I am an OC razor fan (this one makes #7 in my stable). It shaves predictably, with great efficiency and comfort. The engineering, fit, and finish of the 303 stainless parts is impressive, and will no doubt last a couple lifetimes or more; lucky me Winky

Is it worth the $185 price tag? For me, yes it is. It has so much going for it; American made, 303 stainless steel construction, flawless engineering, very intuitive, and it's GORGEOUS!! Manly Man stuff!! Bow

Cheers!
