Last Christmas season during our holidays, I stumbled upon a limited offer of De Vergulde Hand.
For a limited time, it came with a free mug. It also costs next to nothing.
I bought three and planned to PIF these to shaveaficionados not having access to these Dutch soaps as I noticed they seem to have quite a following and lots of members seem interested in at least trying the regular or the Extra Fris (fris means something like refreshing, fresh, clean in Dutch).

And this week I found out that the cheapest parcel from The Netherlands to the US is almost 35 euros.
Would you believe that? That is ridiculous expensive for a soap of a few euros.
So, back to the drawing board to see if I can come up with a better idea for sharing these.
Meanwile, I could not resist opening up one and see how it works.
I should notice that I like a lot if Dutch people have tried this in the past, as it is widely available.
For some reason, I have been less than impressed.
As I tried it this morning, I learned that I might not been adequate in my memories.
Either that, or my lathering skills have significantly improved over the years.
This De Vergulde Hand soap fits the mug which is a sort of nice plastic (not the too cheap kind) nicely, so I turned it into a mug soap. That worked fine. The old Semogue 610 had no problem if creating a nice lather that proved quite stable. A couple of swirls was all it took to build the photogenic meringue like stuff with almost no bubbles. I also liked the fresh, clean scent.
That said, I do not per se like the meringue style later. Too often, it turns out to be style over substance. Not in this case. The shave itself was nice, with the help of the Pearl open comb. The soap did not feel very protective, but it did provide a nice cushion and just enough slickness for an effective and nicks-free shave. It also did leave my skin feeling OK.
All in all, a soap that exceeded my expectations. For the price, I think this soap is hard to beat. It is widely available in supermarkets here in The Netherlands, and that is nice. That, and stuff like Palmolive cream, make life easy for wannabe wetshavers and have a great, easy start and a joyful shaving experience.
