G'day guys. I'm Sam, and I'm from Australia. I was turned on to wetshaving about six months ago now on an Australian web community and pointed in the direction of Paste and Cut, a small forum dedicated to the ancient and mystical art of traditional shaving. At some point, I'm sure someone told me that this would be cheaper.
After half a year of this, I'm sold for life. I'm getting brilliant shaves and I've been having a ball trying all the different options available. I've become singular in purpose. I MUST get the best shave possible. Because it's not only a better shave, it's cheaper...right?
I was already a soap and brush guy, because that was how my father taught me to shave. I abandoned the Mach 3 and started my journey with a Merkur 34C. That was a good call, as it remains my go-to razor of choice. I stuck with the Proraso green at first, because that was what I'd always used. You can buy a tub for cheap from my local supermarket, even Down Under. I had a passed down Culmac boar brush that used to belong to my grandpa. I had a sample blade pack. I was ready to go, and I didn't even need to spend more money. That's how cheap it is...right?
Six months on, I have six DE's, two SE's, four brushes, and enough soap and creams to last me two years. I have enough blades for three years worth of shaving. I don't have much aftershave yet, but that's because the bank has refused the second mortgage on my house.
It has not been cheaper.
It has been exceptionally satisfying and worthwhile though. I'm a convert for life, because I've finally banished the persistent irritation and unhappy skin that was a curse during my cartridge days. I've come to love the ritual of the shave, and I've become a pushy snob who makes snide comments at the dinner table about the inferiority of others shaving routines. Snobbery is obviously effective, because my old man is starting to switch over too.
I was recently considering what to purchase for his birthday when we started talking about Simpson brushes. He suggested I buy him one, and I couldn't be beaten to the top of the mountain by someone who doesn't even shave properly. I'm the happy recipient of a Duke 2, and right now, I'm feeling pretty content with my staple shaving items. All I need for happiness at 7am is a 34C, TOBS Jermyn St, my Duke and some Pinaud Bay Rum.
