My stepfather is quite fascinated by the fact that I am a wet shaver. He has expressed interest in using a DE, but said he quit and threw his away because blades became harder to find.
My idea is to put together a kit for him and present it as a christmas present. He already uses a brush and a mug soap (in a vintage Old Spice Mug), I'm thinking it's Williams, but it could be VdH as well, but he doesn't get my obsession with brushes and razors anyway. In other words, the kit I'm putting together will include a DE, a sample of blades so he can experiment and find what works best for him, and soap sample. I've got some ABCBA on order from IB, so I figured a 4oz cut in a nice container would be nice for him to try.
Problem is, I'm hung up on which razor would best suit him. He wears a beard (it appears to be a pretty course beard to me), never seen him with out it, so the razor would be for cleaning up and keeping his neck clean. My options are an EJ DE86B that I don't use because it's a little too aggressive for me, a 1949 Super Speed that I've cleaned up and soaked in Barbicide, or a Merkur 34c that I've recently fallen back in love with but once I'm done with this blade it'll probably be a while before I get back to it; or I could go way out and give him one of my E2s with a full set of blades.
What do you guys think would be the best option for him. Keep in mind he's used one before so it shouldn't be too hard to relearn, and once he finds some blades he likes, I'll buy them in bulk and give them to him when I place an order; however I am gonna toss in some drugstore blades for him to try (I know, it's crazy).
If he gets into it, a nice Semogue will probably show up for Father's day, as he's a boar man, and has had his boar for decades. I'm choosing the ABCBA because it's a classic scent that he may recognize it once he uses it the first time.
