Hi all.
In my intro I mentioned that I was awaiting a delivery of some shaving equipment. The next day it had arrived. I talked about it a little and sorta promised that I would take some pics and post a little unboxing review. You can see my intro here, for those that missed it... http://shavenook.com/thread-you-don-t-say
This thread is going to be quite pic heavy. Sorry to those that have a slow internet connection.
When I got the box into the house I got the camera and started shooting pics and the pics are taken as I open everything up and this thread brings you along as I discover what was hidden in the box. It will be just like you were standing beside me watching me opening up the box...lol.
Here we go.....
It's packed quite well and lots of packing popkorn.
There's two boxes and I know what I purchased but I'm not sure what's in what box. We'll put this aside for the moment and get the other stuff out first and then open up the other boxes later.
What's that at the bottom???
Ohh, look it's razor blades.
Next up. It's nice big little box from Shavex. The box in real life is quite attractive. The pic doesn't give it justice. It has a weird feel to it. I think it may be made from recycled paper. The printing looks quite nice on the black background.
I like that they have put the block of alum in a plastic container. Keeps it from staining anything and for when you need to put it in your travel bag/case or maybe some of you use a tackle box...lol Actually that might be a good idea. Would keep things organized. Good for one who has OCD issues...Hmm
![[Image: IMG_1126Small.jpg]]()
The alum block is large. It is the largest block of alum I have ever seen. It is 3" long x 1 5/8" wide x 7/8" thick. The size feels good in your hand and you can get a good grip on it. Should last a couple of weeks....Ya think? lol
![[Image: IMG_1129Small.jpg]]()
Wonder what's in this box???
It's the razor blade bank for old used blades.
I like it! It's huge!
It really is big. I like the color. It's a light beige/cream color I guess. Not sure about your computer screen but on mine the color in the pic is just like real life.
Here's a shot for size comparison. Look at the size of the blades compared to the bank. This too should last for a couple weeks until it's full...Wow! That's gonna take years to fill this up. I may not be around to see it full. It's about 4 1/4" at it's girth and a little over 3" high. For those of you who use one of those straight razors where the blades are changeable you can put the razor in the slot and just pull your razor and the blade will just drop in and you won't have to even touch the old blade and risk cutting yourself.
I was wondering when I ordered it if there was a plug at the bottom to empty it but after seeing it for real...You don't need a plug to empty it cus unless you are 12yrs old you'll never see it get full. Unless you change blades for every shave, then I'd say you get a good 10yrs out of it...lol...I really don't know. It is big.
Here we go, the last box and the piece de resistance...The scuttle.
Nicely packed with bubble wrap and shipping popkorn. Lets take it out of the box.
Now that I have it in my hands, I kinda wish I had ordered the scuttle with the same logo as the blade bank but my cheapness made me choose this one. It was on special and I was curious about the colors you see on the side. It kinda looks like when you heat up a chunk of metal.
Nice large opening to put hot water in. The bowl has ridges to hep with frothing up a nice cream.
The scuttle also comes with a soap dish that can be used as a lid for the scuttle to keep dirt and maybe your wife's hair spray from getting into the to the bowl. You can also turn the lid with soap upside down while in storage and keep other nasties from sticking on the soap. And, when you prepare the scuttle for shaving and put hot water in the bottom you keep the soap upside down in the bowl which heats the soap a little and keeps the heat of the water from escaping and it keeps the ceramic warm longer.
The color of the two pieces are almost an exact match, very close. As you can see, they are just about the same size.
A shot of everything. My latest haul.
Well I hope you liked the pictorial unboxing.
Just a side note...I used the scuttle the day after receiving everything and I must say, using this scuttle has changed my shave time. It now takes less time to whip up a good lather and it stays nice and warm not hot but warm for a long time.
If you are a smoker, you could almost have a cigarette break between shaving passes...lol
My usual three passes are pretty much now at the same temperature. 1st to the 3rd pass.
After my first shave was done I decided to do a little testing.
I took a soap that is quite hard and long to produce a good lather and with the use of this scuttle, I was amazed at how well the soap lathered up. I have one boar bristle brush that did not work well with all soaps and cream but again, with this scuttle the boar brush whipped up a froth like it has never done before. I was almost ready to throw that brush out because it ws frustrating me and this scuttle has saved this brush from the trash.
I don't know why I had never bothered with a scuttle before but I did wonder sometimes if it would really help and I am glad I finally decided to get one.
I think I may have just shot myself in the foot so to speak...I may now have to start collecting scuttles....Damn! Here we goooo....I'll have to keep my eyes open when at flea markets and garage sales and what not...
Alright, that's it for me today.
