I pulled out my old trusty Gillette Red Tip just to stay in touch. I ended up with the best shave I've had in awhile (with a Polsilver blade and BDF Exclusivo soap). I always have to ask why I spend time trying to optimize the performance of other razors when the Red Tip never fails me.
In fact I would recommend the Red Tip as the best "beginner" razor. I believe it is noticeably better than the Merkur 38C and the EJ DE89 (or Muhle R89)in that it is in-between the two in aggressiveness. The proper blade angle is a cinch to find. Truly a must have, IMHO.
While I'm here, I'll give a shout out to the BDF Exclusivo (made by TFS), which is a superb soap.
