Port Townsend, WA

My wife and I recently had an overnight trip to Port Townsend, WA to celebrate our anniversary. First we drove to Sequim ('skwim'), a town in the "rain shadow" of the Olympic mountains that gets only 16 inches of rain per year, the same as Los Angeles, despite being close to a rainforest that gets 150 inches each year. Sequim is known for its commercial lavender crops, but also as being the spot where Christopher Boyce (the Falcon character in the 1985 movie The Falcon and the Snowman) hid on a boat in the John Wayne marina after escaping from prison. We had a good brunch there at a favorite café and walked on the beach, then drove down to Port Townsend. We checked in to our B&B, a house built in 1868, and then strolled around looking at the Victorian houses and the old officers' barracks at Fort Worden (site of some of the filming of the 1982 movie An Officer and a Gentleman) and exploring the waterfront arts and crafts shops, before having fresh local Dungeness crab for dinner.


We slept well in our room, which had been shaded from the day's heat by a huge 150-year-old cypress tree.


Before leaving town the next morning we walked through a local museum of 1930s art deco lamps; I know nothing about art deco lamps, but these were beautiful, bringing to mind Hercules Poirot and Jay Gatsby.


The trip home included a ferry ride, always a pleasure in this great weather.
