Captain's Choice contest - FREE bottle to the winner!

We have some big news here at Captain's Choice so why not have some fun with it and run a contest? In the event that more than one person guesses the correct answer then a random list generator will select the winner. And the winner gets one of THESE:

So what is the Big News you ask? Ah, you get to guess. Is it a new product? (Hint - this has nothing to do with the Lime scent under development.) Is it a big new global wholesale customer? Are we to be featured on the TV show, Shark Tank? Did Donald Trump like Captain's Choice so much he just bought the company? How about export - is it now available overseas? If so, where? Or something else perhaps... or perhaps not. OK, so those were a bit over the top or were they? Hmmm, so many possibilities. One thing is for certain, we are VERY excited at the news and can't WAIT to share it!

Here is your hint - "collector's item." So it has nothing to do with our new Lime scent and you are to consider the term, "collector's item."

Here is another hint that may help but not toooo much - it took three months of steady work.

The rules:

1. One guess per person.
2. CONUS only due to alcohol contents.
3. This is open to everyone - members, lurkers, stewards, fellow vendors and moderators. Come one, come ALL!
4. The winner will be drawn April 10.
5. If the winner prefers, they may instead choose our popular Cat O' Nine Tails aftershave OR four of our olive oil based bar soaps (more information is available on our site):

FS: Merkur 25C OC Razor...

$

FS: Merkur 25C Open Comb, long handle (head like new, tiny spot on handle so small you won't even see it) w/ original box - $32.00

This was my first OC razor and a mild one it is. Don't be afraid of mild though... that's a good thing for many of us. You can easily get to BBS with this. It has a beautiful, light-weight, long handle with enough grip to not slip. It's nicely balanced in hand. I'd keep it in my rotation, but I rotate an iKon OC baseplate onto my Feather AS-D1, and so... this is kind of redundant for me. A new Merkur 37C (slant), sealed my intent to sell this - much as I like it, my razor needs are covered. Btw, Ownership of this razor qualifies you to become a member of the BOTOC. Let's not forget that. Seriously, you'll have no regrets on this piece.

PayPal only please. Prices include shipping to CONUS - everywhere else at actual cost.

Thank for looking,
Rob

Merkur Mergress?

Does anyone know how often a year the Mergress upgrades are released for sale by Lee? When was the last time they were in stock? Thanks.

Eveready Shovelhead question.

1st shave with the Shovelhead I bought a couple of weeks ago. I have been getting very close shaves with all the SE's in my collection. Tonite my shave just wasn't as close as I've been getting. That being after I was told the Shovelhead was a fairly aggressive razor. I was expecting a really close shave. Maybe even a bit of blood...lol

After the shave I inspected the razor a bit more closely. I found the blade was not being held all the way up to the blade stops. It was sort of loose in there.

On the inside are a couple of appendages that look as if they are supposed to push the blade forward. Am I correct in assuming that to be the case? If so can I bend them forward just a pinch to put pressure on the spine of the blade and keep it pushed all the way forward?

Your thoughts would be appreciated Thanks....

Muhle R41 Tooth Comb (Original Version)

.png  Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 2.22.54 PM.png (Size: 329.25 KB / Downloads: 70)

This is the more aggressive original version with the greater blade exposure.
Used maybe half a dozen times and presents as new.
I shaved without issue with it, but recently acquired a Rose Gold R41 and no longer require this one.

$50 including shipping to the US (I will ship to other locations too).

Next is an add on only (due to shipping costs I'll only sell this in conduction with another purchase):

Review of the 'new' Turkish No6 horse hair brush

$

A while ago I reviewed two Turkish brushes - the imaginatively named No6 and No7 - and was in general pleased with the result. Sometime after I had bought the two brushes however, the No6 was 'upgraded' by the manufacturer:

Quote:Please note, this product has been revised according to customer requirements.
Now, more quality, and aesthetics

Seeing as how I PIFed my original No6 away, I just had to get a new one... well, so I told myself at least.

.jpg  newTurkishNo6.jpg (Size: 9.15 KB / Downloads: 37)
The handle sits somewhat better in my hand than the original No6 did, due to the slightly more bulbous shape. The knot is very similar to the original, but the mounting of it is now done with a slightly better looking plastic ring.

In use the new No6 is more or less indistinguishable as the original No6 - good backbone, good flow, very little scratching. It'll make lather just as good as a more expensive brush, but you'll find it'll hold less of it - more than enough for two passes though.

There is - as it was with the original No6 and the No7 - some discussion online as to the nature of the knot - horse or pig. Personally I suspect it's a case of 'whatever we can find', but since Turkey is a predominately Muslim country I lean towards horse. Or at least partly horse - my original No6 certainly smelled rather strongly of stables, but a few hand lathers fixed that.

There is also a lot of indications that the quality control can be at best spotty - some users reports their brushes developing a 'crater' in the middle after a while. But for a brush costing about the same as a cup of coffee, can you expect perfection?

To repeat what I said in my original review; the No6 would be an excellent first brush for a newbie not wanting to spend much money on a new hobby. It'll would also be a good "first horse" for more experienced shavers who wants to try something new. Or you could simply get one just for the fun of it - letting you get one more brush in your rotation without laying out more money than you would for a cup of coffee.

Can you afford not to try one?

WTT 37C, Progress, Mergress XL and Semogue LE 2011 for Duke 3 or Chubby 3

And here we go again, as the rule in my den is one razor in is another one out I had to make some decisions and these 3 razors are up for trade together with a brush.

A brand new Merkur 37C (this one was kept as a backup, the used one is all ready gone)

A brand new Merkur Progress 500 (this one was also kept as a backup, the used one is all ready gone)

A slightly used Mergress XL bought from Lee's razors (shaved 4 times with it)

A brand new Semogue Limited Edition 2011 Bristle 2 Boar (ordered one but package got stolen at the door, bought another one but a few weeks later I got the replacement package and kept that one unused)

Now what do I seek: A Simpson Duke 3 or A Simpson Chubby 3 in very good condition. In return you get one or more items from the ones above depending at what you have to offer.

I Wish you all a nice shave

I finally sourced a locally made shaving soap
that actually appears promising...

.png  Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 7.07.11 PM.png (Size: 19.7 KB / Downloads: 43)

It's hand made in my home state of Western Australia
in the suburb of South Fremantle
which is only about 10km from where I live.

This Organic Shaving Soap is described as...
"made using the most nourishing oils,
and contains bentonite clay to help draw out impurities and to aid razor glide. It is scented with an earthy blend of essential oils,
giving a sensuous, uplifting fragrance."

Ingredients:
Extra virgin olive oil, virgin coconut oil (Fair Trade),
unrefined shea butter (Fair Trade), cocoa butter (Fair Trade) , lye,
jojoba oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, bentonite clay,
essential oils of cedarwood, geranium and patchouli, and rosemary leaf extract.

.png  Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 7.21.41 PM.png (Size: 493.75 KB / Downloads: 43)

At $23 AUD for a 100ml tin it is not inexpensive.
However, it is 95% Certified Organic,
not tested on animals and Palm Oil free.

The scent when taken directly from the tin is a little robust,
but not unpleasant.

I will give it a try tomorrow and report back...

Help needed in getting a responce from Kent

I have made two unsuccessful attempts in contacting the Kent Brush Co.
I am asking them for assistance in gaining info on a Vtg Kent handle that I believe to be a Kent V-7

I am also asking Kent if the purchase a few Kent logo stickers as pictured below is possible. (?)

.jpg  Kent Logo.jpg (Size: 55.77 KB / Downloads: 30)

If anyone can assist in getting me a better email address then the one I've been using: info@kentbrushes.com I would be very grateful.
I'm hoping that one of you may know of a particular Kent contact person that has been helpful in offering guidance as you have needed similar help.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Haul with unboxing review(lots of pics)

Hi all.

In my intro I mentioned that I was awaiting a delivery of some shaving equipment. The next day it had arrived. I talked about it a little and sorta promised that I would take some pics and post a little unboxing review. You can see my intro here, for those that missed it... http://shavenook.com/thread-you-don-t-say

This thread is going to be quite pic heavy. Sorry to those that have a slow internet connection.

When I got the box into the house I got the camera and started shooting pics and the pics are taken as I open everything up and this thread brings you along as I discover what was hidden in the box. It will be just like you were standing beside me watching me opening up the box...lol.

Here we go.....

It's packed quite well and lots of packing popkorn.

There's two boxes and I know what I purchased but I'm not sure what's in what box. We'll put this aside for the moment and get the other stuff out first and then open up the other boxes later.

What's that at the bottom???

Ohh, look it's razor blades.

Next up. It's nice big little box from Shavex. The box in real life is quite attractive. The pic doesn't give it justice. It has a weird feel to it. I think it may be made from recycled paper. The printing looks quite nice on the black background.

I like that they have put the block of alum in a plastic container. Keeps it from staining anything and for when you need to put it in your travel bag/case or maybe some of you use a tackle box...lol Actually that might be a good idea. Would keep things organized. Good for one who has OCD issues...Hmm
[Image: IMG_1126Small.jpg]

The alum block is large. It is the largest block of alum I have ever seen. It is 3" long x 1 5/8" wide x 7/8" thick. The size feels good in your hand and you can get a good grip on it. Should last a couple of weeks....Ya think? lol
[Image: IMG_1129Small.jpg]

Wonder what's in this box???

It's the razor blade bank for old used blades.

I like it! It's huge!

It really is big. I like the color. It's a light beige/cream color I guess. Not sure about your computer screen but on mine the color in the pic is just like real life.

Here's a shot for size comparison. Look at the size of the blades compared to the bank. This too should last for a couple weeks until it's full...Wow! That's gonna take years to fill this up. I may not be around to see it full. It's about 4 1/4" at it's girth and a little over 3" high. For those of you who use one of those straight razors where the blades are changeable you can put the razor in the slot and just pull your razor and the blade will just drop in and you won't have to even touch the old blade and risk cutting yourself.

I was wondering when I ordered it if there was a plug at the bottom to empty it but after seeing it for real...You don't need a plug to empty it cus unless you are 12yrs old you'll never see it get full. Unless you change blades for every shave, then I'd say you get a good 10yrs out of it...lol...I really don't know. It is big.

Here we go, the last box and the piece de resistance...The scuttle.

Nicely packed with bubble wrap and shipping popkorn. Lets take it out of the box.

Now that I have it in my hands, I kinda wish I had ordered the scuttle with the same logo as the blade bank but my cheapness made me choose this one. It was on special and I was curious about the colors you see on the side. It kinda looks like when you heat up a chunk of metal.

Nice large opening to put hot water in. The bowl has ridges to hep with frothing up a nice cream.

The scuttle also comes with a soap dish that can be used as a lid for the scuttle to keep dirt and maybe your wife's hair spray from getting into the to the bowl. You can also turn the lid with soap upside down while in storage and keep other nasties from sticking on the soap. And, when you prepare the scuttle for shaving and put hot water in the bottom you keep the soap upside down in the bowl which heats the soap a little and keeps the heat of the water from escaping and it keeps the ceramic warm longer.

The color of the two pieces are almost an exact match, very close. As you can see, they are just about the same size.

A shot of everything. My latest haul.

Well I hope you liked the pictorial unboxing.

Just a side note...I used the scuttle the day after receiving everything and I must say, using this scuttle has changed my shave time. It now takes less time to whip up a good lather and it stays nice and warm not hot but warm for a long time.
If you are a smoker, you could almost have a cigarette break between shaving passes...lol
My usual three passes are pretty much now at the same temperature. 1st to the 3rd pass.

After my first shave was done I decided to do a little testing.
I took a soap that is quite hard and long to produce a good lather and with the use of this scuttle, I was amazed at how well the soap lathered up. I have one boar bristle brush that did not work well with all soaps and cream but again, with this scuttle the boar brush whipped up a froth like it has never done before. I was almost ready to throw that brush out because it ws frustrating me and this scuttle has saved this brush from the trash.
I don't know why I had never bothered with a scuttle before but I did wonder sometimes if it would really help and I am glad I finally decided to get one.
I think I may have just shot myself in the foot so to speak...I may now have to start collecting scuttles....Damn! Here we goooo....I'll have to keep my eyes open when at flea markets and garage sales and what not...

Alright, that's it for me today.

Help me choose my first luxury shaving brush

$

With my birthday coming up, SWMBO has decided to let me pick a brush of my choice under $250. Since I dont have a single brush over $100, I am not sure which one to go for. Here is what I am looking for, so I am hoping you guys can help me pick something.

- I am mostly a soap user, but I have a few creams.
- I face or bowl lather depending on mood, but off late its been face lather.
- Would prefer very soft tips with some backbone.
- Would prefer a larger knot - 26mm or higher (my largest brush right now is 24 mm).
- Not sure about the brush density.

Based on reading the forums, it looks like the following might be good candidates:

- Thater 4125/2 two band fan
- Rooney heritage 2XL

Any other suggestions?

I received a decant of 5ml Knize Ten yesterday, and as much as I was looking forward to it I am disappointed in it. I think its the floral notes, but it's given me a headache 2 days in a row, there is also a undertone in it, that i can put my finger on.. but it doesnt agree with my nose at all. What are some of your thoughts on Knize Ten?
